What you need:
  • a PC
  • a live cable feed
  • One of three software choices - XP or Vista Media Centre; Mediaportal; or DVBDream/ProgDVB/DVBViewer/other DVB-C program
  • One or more DVB-C cards - usually FloppyDTV C/CI for Media Centre and Hardcam programs or Technotrend C-1501 for the softcam ones
  • If you're using a software that can support softcams, a copy of vplug
  • If you're using a software that doesn't support softcam, you'll need a Hardcam - a BlueZeta or Icecrypt CAM flashed with Joker 0.79 or 0.80 and a Funcard4 (or equivalent/better)
  • A card programmer - Inifinty USB and CAS3+ are popular, CAS3+ can also flash CAMs
  • Thechatterbox.cc toolbar installed
Everything else you need is within this very forum (speaking from experience, here's where I learned everything) so get searching and reading.

If I get the Technotrend C-1501 will I need to purchase anything else or is it all sofware from then on?
Also how often does this system need updating compared to a cablebox system (and how difficult is it)

Cheers

Peter

There was a big change last April and again in Nov for the cards. Vplug has had 4 updates in the last 2 months.

The people we owe it all to who make these updates are very quick about it. Sometimes its only hours before they are posted and requires a file download.

The cards need a new flash its all pretty painless. Most cards and vplug autoupdate.

So long as you're happy sticking to software that can use softcam's, then a C-1501 is all the hardware you'll need. You'll only need more hardware if you're using a software that doesn't support softcam.
