docsis 3 uses BPI+ like docsis 2 and 1.1 had, however its now required by default and cant be disabled.

to pass bpi+ you need a mac address and its matching signed cert, which is stored in the modems nonvol.

to clone a modem you would need physical access to the modem to dump the chip.

the encryption isnt going to be broken as its RSA.
Ah yes, mandatory BPI+, thats what I was thinking of that makes Docsis 3.0 more secure.

I think it would be foolish to say they are 100% secure, after all Nagravision and WEP both looked good on paper, nowadays it's possible to crack a WEP key in under 2 minutes with the right tools and a bit of luck. (aircrack-ptw)

Now I know that really is a different topic but it's just to highlight how over time, many once secure systems are now practiaclly useless when 'tested'.

I do agree that RSA probably wont be broken.

But... I think it's reasonable to assume that there is a chance there does exist some kind of exploitable flaw with Docsis 3.0, weather it be fake authentication, cloning, uncapping or somethign else only time will tell.

But like you say, the Docsis 3.0 system is much more secure than the current system and for the foreseeable future, possibly until it is retired it will stay that way.

so in theory
if the encryption is broken the only way to clone a modem would be to go to a friends and dump their modem details give them yours and share?

even then if theres 2 modems with the same details anywhere on the network they would both get blacklisted?

fun times to come

Will the older modems such as Ambit and Motorola SB51xx modems become obsolete pretty soon?

I think we will have a while yet, as not everyone will want to pay for 50meg, even if the modems free!!
