Hi all,
Right, I am a complete newbie to this and a complete technophobe so all replies need to be be detailed, or have links to the posts that can help me. Ive been looking through this site and it is a minefield of information but its overloading my brain! Basically I have sky+ at the minute but sick of paying 19 quid a month to watch the channels that I do watch, now that I have found out I can get for free, however......... Not really sure what what the differences between ftv, fta etc are? Also without ripping out the sky dish and sticking up a motorized dish (we are renting and not sure the landlord will be best pleased) what do I actually need to buy to get going, and how do I actually get it all set up? What is the best kit to buy? I dont really want to lose the record feature of sky+ and the Mrs would love to keep the pause thingy if possible. Also we wouldnt mind having a few of the more adult type of entertainment channels , is this a possibility through the sky dish? Thanks in advance for your answers and sorry for all the questions

If you only want to pick up programs from the 28e position (sky) then the dish is fine. If you get rid of your Sky+ subscription i'm not sure if Sky will leave the recording features active, in which case you would need to get a new reciever with a Hard Drive.
FTA - Free To Air, Can be watched on any reciever. FTV - Free To View, Needs an active yellow house sky card £20 from sky. It is possible to get the adult chanels from 28e all you need is a valid subscription. |

Not much you can do with just a sky dish on 28E.
If you cancel your subs you lose Sky+ An option may be to get a Humax HDR. It has twin tuners and will get all the FTA channels, including the 1 or 2 HD ones. I can only assume that it does the live pause etc, as I don't have one, but it is a recorder.

Thanks for the repilies guys.
So am I right in thinking that if I get a new receiver its just a case of plugging in the cable from the dish and searching for the channels? Does anyone know of a decent supplier of receivers, adult subscriptions etc etc? Also can you put an extra lnb onto a sky dish to pick up extra statellites? Questions questions questions!! Thanks again..... |

Check southern satallite and the other registered traders on here would be a good start for a reciever. For 28e it is just as simple as plugging the reciever into the dish and scanning.
I think (and someone will correct if I'm wrong) that a sky minidish would be to small for a multilnb setup. You would probably need a 90cm dish or larger. Why not go motorised ? |

You'd want a bigger dish to make it worth while. If your planning on fitting it yourself, putting the sky dish back up would be easy after you've got a motorised setup up and running.

If you don't want it up at the same time as the motorised on, take it off the wall without adjusting the mount and when it's fitted back into the same place it should still point the same way.

The only way I know is via a sky card. I don't think you need a sky subscription, as long as you have the viewing card.
