I second that notion, my job is IT Administration and i have had to eradicate several morons in the past for attacking our domain!

As mentioned by Parricull, you really don't need to appologise Brian, not in the slightest - I'm sure many loyal members to the forum agree.

Happy to help, should it be needed, please keep up the good work, its pure brilliance, would be a massive shame to lose it!

Also, when the missus allows me to spend a lil more cash, I'll chuck a wee donation in the kitty, to show my appreciation for all the work thats been put in and continues to be put into this website.

The point in many cases (this included) is extortion.

I can say that sometimes websites need attacking
The internet watch foundation put a Wikipedia article into its blacklist
This prevented most ISP's from letting the UK edit Wikipedia
It got Ddos into the ground for 18 hours

next day Wikipedia is unblocked

or take anonymous vs Cult of scientology
That Ddos escalated into a full grown Protest Movement Against the Cult

I agree that Ddos for extortion or Just For no reason at all are pretty damm lame

Basically, it involves someone directly trying to attack the server by flooding it with useless requests until the server conks out. Usually takes a bot network to do this, but attacks can seem random sometimes.

To try and cope with this the techs had to shut down the Techwatch IP while the traffic was filtered out until we only had normal traffic - unfortunately, took longer than expected.

Am going to speak to the people at the datacenter and see if there's a way to set up a firewall solution to minimise the chances of this happening again.

In the meantime, am keeping an eye on the server to see if anything unexpected comes up and can be dealt with as happens.
Apologies - happened again - with anywhere between 50-500 Mbs hitting the server over the past hour with a 2.5 Gbps peak.

Anyway, back up - see if we can remain online again.
