Just a quicky on a thread I posted about Discharging caps No Power thread) DO NOT use the screwdriver method on the main Hi voltage capacitor to discharge it (OOOUUUCCCHHH)
I picked up 3 dead KV's yesterday for £10, I got 2 going again BUT on the first one I decided to have a test at, I got a right F****ing Belt off it and I've got the burn marks on my left fingers as proof) OK this is the daft mistake I made, I opened the kv and then took main PSU off and put it on my knee, as I was turning the board over my fingers touched the main Hi-volt cap and sparks came off my hand and it threw me off my chair (I know for deffo that this kv hadn't been plugged in for at least 2 weeks when I got em, also I didn't have it powered up when I tested it obviously) OK I think it's only right to post this on thread to warn u lot who got dead power issues, don't try to Discharge the main cap with the screwdriver method, Safest method is get a 100 watt bulb fixed to a sockett, next put the 2 terminals from the bulb to the HV cap and it will then safely discharge this dangerous cap (if holding a charge you will see the bulb light up bright and then slowly start goin' dim) once bulb has dimmed or gone off you can be assured that the cap is safe to touch, an added precauton, after yer discharged the cap with this method, you can then touch the terminals with a screwdriver and if no sparks then yer will be ok to then handle it, also the danger of doing the screwdriver method is that in most cases when it's holding a hi charge you will Arc the circuit and Destroy other componenets and you will get a very loud bang and it can even melt solder and whack it in to your eyes and cause serious damage to your eyes. SO be safe and follow these simple tips I have posted, also if yer think I'm using scare tactics then just ask anyone who is fluent on electronics about Hi Voltage Caps and the DANGER they can do even when power suplly is unplugged, a HI Volt cap CAN BE LETHAL. ps I told mi mate about what I did (He reairs Tv's hi-fi etc (But He's not an expert on this, he does it for an hobby and isn't Fluent on this BUT he told me that the worst part on doing Tv repairs is going near the Hi V caps and transformers cos he's been thrown off his chair a few times (OUCH), not a nice expierence, Trust Me) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() : wacko:![]() ![]()

According to the ginger bearded one on mithbusters it only takes 50 miliamps across your heart to stop it pumping, causes it to spasm or something, you only have ten minutes or so for brain damage to occur, how long does an ambulance take to come these days ? thats if theres someone around to call it, safety first.

Yeah! another great relpy mate, yeah yer can hold a live wire coming from a 220-240 volt AC and just get a bit of a shockn' (if yer earthing yersel it won't harm yer unless yer got a metal object in yer other hand (obviously yer wouldn't if yer were Testing a circuit) BUT the Danger is when it's in be it a TV, Radio KV S-View when it's running through a circuit with these Dangerous HV Caps etc it will just amplify and boost the voltage up very high (and has you rightly point ouy it can be Lethal and that's the bottom line. So once again if yer playin about with HV caos, if yer not fluent THEN don't **** about on em and either take yer box to a a Expert Engineer or be very careful. ![]() ps any of you guys got a Mp3 of (Daft Punk/Digital Love OR The Tears/Lovers) yer can send mi, Can't get these 2 any where, hope admin don't mind me askin' this, PM Mi if yer got either of these! or even Daft Punk/Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger Last edited by jambutty; 30-01-09 at 04:23 AM.
