Default Noobie Question - Please Help

Looking at the Eurovox EX5100 PVR

Just some questions:

1. Is this just plug in and watch or do you need to subscribe to the basic installation package with a cable distributer, such as Virgin? Some people have said this is not the case whilst others have said you definaltly need to be on the minimum pay monthly package

2. Is there a full list of channels which are shown on this set top box anywhere?

3. I heard that the codes on these boxes are re-set every so often - is that true? What do you do to go about setting them up again?

4. I understand you can plug an external hard drive into this box? Is that true - can it be just a standard hard drive you would buy an ebay or does it have to be a particular model? Is it that simple?

5. Again, some people have said it it plug and play - others say you need to connect the box to a PC and ' flash ' it - which is correct?

Many thanks guys - much appreciated in advance

1. As long as there is a cable provider connection in your home and has not been dissconnected at any time then its possible that you wont need
to subscribe to the basic installation package with a cable distributer, plug your box in and it may well be ready to watch. If you dont have this then you will have to subscribe for the basic installation package with a cable distributer.

2. You can ask on the forum to see if any member has a channel list for your area.

3. The cable providers regular change the codes on the system, this is called Key rolling, if your box has got the latest firmware to adjust to the key roll then the box will update by its self, if not then all info and updates are on the web, google for "the chatterbox . cc" and download this toolbar to your PC/Laptop

4. I dont have an Eurovox EX5100 PVR, but like most of the pvr boxes, you can plug an external hard drive into the box, read up on the Eurovox forum and you will find out about the limited size recomended and best place where to purchase from.

5. Not quite sure if the hard drive it plug in and play, so if i were to buy the Eurovox PVR the i would go for one that already has the hard drive put in, just saves a lot of problems configuring and all that.

Hope this is of some help to you, good luck..jay

Sorry for lack of intricduction but was running late from work this morning - just a normal dude from Manchester - more into retro gaming than cable tv to be honest, but heard a lot of talk about these boxes and just wondered what all the crack was about

Cheers for the reply - to clariify my point 5 was not about the hard drive but the actual box. Does it have to be connected to the internet first to flash it? Or can I just hook it up to my TV?

Cheers guys

it will more than likely have only the free to air firmware on it so to unscramble the other channels it will need the firmware updating (flashing) this is done by downloading the firmware from the internet to your PC, you then connect the box to the PC to flash it with the new firmware
if it comes already flashed then its just a matter of connecting to TV and scannining for channels

Cheers dude - a friend has just bough one for me from a shop ( under the counter job ) and it came with some instuctions - just been round to his gaff to collect it.

States:

Pess Menu - go to Installation

Go to User installation and press ok

If asked for pin pres 0000

Then press blue button for power scan

When you see start and the pin is 100,00 change it to 282.75 and press ok

Leave it to scan.

Does this sound like it is flashed already? Dont wanna go connecting it up to my PC if it is all ready to view. The other question is that 282.75 code - is that just for Manchester? As thats where the shop is where it was purchased from. I was going to bring it to my girlfriends house in Wigan - would the same code work?

Is it possible I will NEVER have to flash it? If I want to search for new channels - just repeat the above?

I think its referring to the start frequency
you need to put a start and end frequency in (the box will scan this range)
you also need to input the correct symbolrate, Wigan is 6952
when you get all your channels if you have the correct firmware on you will be able to view s*y sports etc.

I don't have the 5100 but I would think it is similar to earlier eurovoxes.
the symbolrate is on the same installation page where you input the frequency range for scanning
