Default Eurovox 1000sl black - set up guide needed

Hi Guys,
I hope I've posted in right forum as I've already made a blunder that way. Anyway I've just got a Eurovox black 1000sl and haven't got a clue as to how to set it up as I'm not very tech savvy. If any of you guys could help me with a beginners guide as to how to download firmware and then load it onto box etc I would be very grateful. I'm using a Samsung netbook XP . Do I need to hook up to a tv whilst doing setup ?
Ive got a usb rs232 connection between box and laptop. any help at all is appreciated.
Thanks,
Multispeed

Have a looking at the 'sticky' posted at the top of the forum called, Ronsters Guide To Flashing Box For Newbies

You need to connect your box to your computer in order to flash it, no connection to your tv is required.

Thank you , Eldudereno,
I have to say again I am completely new to all this stuff and haven't a clue tech wise. I did as you said though and maybe I'm very dense but I don't even know where to look for firmware folder to begin with otherwise I've hookked up as described except that I am not hooked up to tv.The guide doesn't specify the 1000sl black model but I assume it applies nevertheless.Further help needed if possible please. Try to bear with an old man not very tech savvy.

Thanks Guys,
Located guide and downloaded firmware to desktop and then tethered box to laptop via usb/ rs232 . I left box on red light / standby as shown and tried to upload but nothing is happening when I press upload or download and no port is being detected. Powered off and on again and went to device manager / ports and all is ok there. I hope I'm not being dense and I know I must be doing something wrong but what?
I won't be keeping this thread goin on too long as I don't want to bother you guys overmuch so if I can't get it goin soon I'll forget it . Any ideas, Guys, Please

Quite a few people have had issues with USB connections, do a search for USB and you will find a fair few threads on this issue

Its easy mate u can do it yourself if you got everything only a matter of clicking like 2 buttons on the software. If you get stuck jus giv us a shout we will sort u out but its pretty self explanatory really tbh.
