Default Can anyone tell a newbie if he can get both Sky & freesat in this way?....

Hi. I'm a newbie who has Sky+. I've looked through old forums for this question without finding it so apologies if this answer already somewhere else. I've tried not to be an irritating lazy poster!

Since I may become a victim of the recession soon I'd like to stop paying Sky.... Before I spend money on a freesat unit, if I buy a freesat box with recorder could I attach one of the cables currently running into the Sky+ box to that and leave the other cable connected to the Sky+ box...giving me recordable Freesat from one box and non-recordable FreesatFromSky from the other? And if so would I have to do anything tricky to switch between them? Thanks for any help guys.

Both boxs will work with one cable, but to record you need both cables into one box. I know from experience

I can't really see the point of having a Freesat twin tuner recorder and a Sky box not subbed.

But if you did want this, then you probably have a Quad LNB already, so all you need to do is run a couple of extra cables to the Freesat box.

Try setting a fake recording of something like a radio station - this will try to take (non operational) input 2. Then set up the actual wanted recording - this should grab input 1.

Good advice guys - thank you.

Being a newbie Robbo, I'm not sure what you mean by 'subbed'. Dumb I know, but it's not a term I'm familiar with!

Oh, yes, sorry, it means a receiver that has a subscription. Unfortunately I think it may be a term that I have accidently picked up from reading some of the posts in the cable section.

Thanks Robbo.
My thoughts were that I'd get a freesat recorder to record things, but keep the Sky+ box without a subscription, using that to get the extra channels which I believe FreesatFromSky provides - more than Freesat offers. I could be wrong in that but it's my rationale.

mmm, let me see, Sky three, Five US, FIve US +1,Fiver, Fiver+1, and one other I think, can't remember the name.

If you particularly want to watch these, then the rationale is good, otherwise not.

....I see your point! If that's all the extras that Sky would give me I'll join you in lol

Both cables into Freesat it is then!

Sounds good, and not giving in to Sky's pathetic attempt to charge you to record FREE channels on a receiver that YOU own.
