Default Newbie question

Hi guys

I'm new on here and have been reading solid for about 2 hours, but i am still completely lost. I just wondered if anyone could give me a brief overview on how all this sattelite stuff works, ie what are cams, provider ids etc. I am mainly interested in channels were i could watch premiership football. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Leon.

Hi,

Take a look at liveonsat.com this will give you details of every match and on what channel.
A cam or common interface module is used to read a subscription card and allow viewing of encrypted chanels. Cam's like the Diablo can open certian chanels without a card. At the mo the diablo will open canal and digi on 1w and digialb on 16e plus a few others.
When I first started i spent hours reading, and I'm still learning now.

hope that helps.

Leon,

I am a newbie 2, who has just got a motorised system up and running, I was fed up with having big HDTV tv and never seeing HD content. So went out and bought a Vantage HD receiver and plugged it into sky dish. HD for the first time - woohoo.

Then after looking on here and chatting to a few of the guys (who are all excellent) I got myself a 80cm dish and a tecnomate motor (southern satellite - as cheap as I could find anywhere and extremely helpful when I thought motor was not working,he correctly diagnosed a short circuit on one of the F connectors).

Anyhow - tips picked up along the way:

Buy a box that can be patched with softkeys - costs nothing and opens up quite a bit - DIGITV on THOR is worth having - There seems a lot of software about for Darkboxes, but Vantage and Technomates amongst others can be done.

Deinitely go motorised.

Pick a receiver that has cam and ci slots - if you want more channels a Diablo cam and a cas3 programmer will open up Digitalb.

DEFINITELY BUY A SATFINDER - there is a lot of sky up there to wiggle a dish at.

Hope this helps.

Geoff
