Default Which HD Reciever ?

A friend of mine is looking at getting a HD system together. Can anyone recommend a good reciever ? He isn't sure on how much he wants to spend but a PVR would be good so your thoughts would be appriciated. He was thinking of a dreambox 7020 but with more broadcasts using MPEG4 in SD as well more HD content planned thought a HD reciever might be the way to go.

The Dreambox 7020 is not HD. The only HD Dreamboxes are the 800 and the 8000.

If you mean HDD (hard drive pvr) then all of the dreamboxes work except the old 500 and even that can record to a pc hard drive.

Thanks Jim. I know the 7020 is a SD box, that is what he was thinking of getting. He would like a PVR with an internal drive. What are the AZBOX boxes like that Southern Sat is offering are they comparable to the dreambox ?

If you want a linux receiver that does pretty much all then the Cube Revo is a good bet; twin tuner (plug and play between sat, cable, terrestrial), compatible with card sharing, 3rd party support, HDMI of course, drag and drop of files over network with ftp, Divx playback, plug in / external HDD etc, etc

Its only good for FTA as has many issues with cams, you are better off paying an extra £80 and getting either the Next 2000 (Octagon 918) or Golden Interstar 900CI both better spec with cards readers, CI slots, VFD display, PVR functions and the Next can be patched.

In my opinion:-
The Pace box is also a pig to set up. The menu structure is totally illogical, and the channel sort features are very unsatisfactory too.

Hi Rob,i found the Octagon 518 pig to set up with it patched,if the Octagon 918 menus are like the 518 id stay away.Vantage 8000HD with a EX hard drive i quite like, with receivers there are pros & cons some good some bad.Vantage 8000HD works good with a seagate ex hard drive.Vantage 8000HD best firmware in my book is 02.55t-0 todate. On my Vantage 8000HD iv ORG software only, but works fine with dcam.Remote is very good on the Vantage 8000HD.Media settings are about the best iv come across if you like to save channel lists.it very easy & very well layed out,iv not used a better receiver for this,as of yet.It not the farstest scanning speed iv come across, but will do.Mhz steps lol Vantage 8000HD made a boo boo.1 mhz steps scans in 2 mhz steps lol, wonder how many saw this out their.2mhz steps scans in 4 mhz steps & so on.Vantage 8000HD you can update firmware over the air by net.Vantage 8000HD has a better tuner than azbox but format res is not as good as azbox.Tms boxes i dont like,no offence to those who have, each 2 their own.
