Smile What do you think of thease temp?

hi my little bro has his frist gaming computer that i bulit for him and i would like to see if you think these temps are high. The Spec is

Intel Pentuim 4 HT 3.0Ghz
Asrock P4VM900-Sata 2
Thermal take big Typhoon
1GB of DDR
Nvidia 8600GTS
Antec 300 (fan setup is 120mm Rear intake, 80MM Out take on top case)
400Watt No Name PSU

So the temps are at a constant 40C in the bios. But in windows they are repoted at 33c all the time and the motherboard is 35C all the time. Do you think that this could be down to a bad probe of something like that. the software that i am using to monitor them are SpeedFan and Everest Ultimate edition.

thanks for any you can give

graham

Its quite good. Dont want to criticize TOO much but here goes

Intel Pentuim 4 HT 3.0Ghz(which CPU is it? Because the E8400 is best for gaming)
Asrock P4VM900-Socket 478? No good for gaming, you'll be best off upgrading to an MSI P35/P45 Neo
Thermal take big Typhoon - good, nice, quiet
1GB of DDR - Personally I would upgrade to at least 2GB but I see no harm in only 1GB and 1GB DDR2(in a socket 754 mobo) is what I would have not 1GB DDR
Nvidia 8600GTS - Goof choice
Antec 300- Whatever you like. Cases are always personal preference. Nice subtle case. I like NZXT cases, but hey thats me
400Watt No Name PSU- should be enough but if you want a quiet PC,(the PSU makes a lot of noise if buying cheap) then I recommend you check 80 Plus out. I quite like Corsair/Delta/Hipro PSU's

EDIT: For maximum quietness and efficiency I recommend you invest in something like this to see how much power your using. Run the PC at idle and with Orthos/Prime 95 and see what wattage you get. Maplins have these reduced to £10. Then I would get a 80 plus PSU with double the wattage that my PC is running at. eg: if the PC is running @ 200W @ load, then I would get an 80 plus 400W PSU. 50% load of a PSU is generally how you will get the PSU more efficient and at it's quietest. Of course, if you dont care about efficiency or quiet-ness then you dont really have to worry about sound proofing your PC

It will be correct in BIOS or if Asrock gave you something to measure temperature, I would use that. The ones for Windows are good but sometimes are way off. Run these temp probe programs when you startup but first check what your temp is in BIOS. Say your temp is 40C in BIOS, and when you start the PC up, Everest gets a temp of 43C but SpeedFan gives a temp of 50C I would use Everesy as it is close to the actual temp. There isn't really a best program to monitor your temp unless you are using one that the board manufacture gave you. In my case I am using Fox One to monitor temps. I have found CoreTemp to be the most accurate, but thats just on my system and speedfan might be more accurate on other systems

40C at startup for Pentium 4's is a reasonable temp

Now thats a nice mainstream PC-just better than mine and Im not exactly a gamer 20C is really quite good. Now on dual core CPU's, the temps are generally less. Take my X2 4850E, at idle 15C!At load 30C(on stock!) Obviously the reason being that I can get a lower temp than you is because Ive got a CPU with less TDP

My spec:
CPU: AMD X2 4850E
Mobo: Foxconn 6150M2MA KRS2H
RAM: 2*1GB DDR2 667Mhz Kingston
HDD:Seagate 250 GB SATA 7200rpm
ODD: Samsung SH203
PSU: Corsair VX450W
Monitor: Hanns.G HW191D
Case:Colors it ATX-C8001 4in1 Black
OS: Windows XP Home SP3

Me, I should really get a 255W Delta PSU to keep it efficient, but they dont have them for sale anywhere!

If the PC you built for your brother can cope with gaming, I dont think it matters too much about the temp. If it couldn't cope with gaming, then it will just shut down(if the load was too high and reached 70C) You can enable this in the BIOS
