Default DVD HDD recorder and freeview set up help please

I have an LG TV with freeview and have just bought a funai dvd hdd recorder player
According to the set up instructions I put a scart into the the AV1 connection on the DVD player and run that to the TV
a lead from the wall ariel to antenna in on the rear of the player
and a lead from the ariel point on the tv to the antenna out connection
then press input on the remote to AVI 1 and scan for channels
all this finds is 4 channels and about 5 channels with virgin media logo saying has stopped with analogue
any ideas why it wont bring the freeview channels up?
driving me barmy!!!
any help is very appreciated

Do you have the digital/Freeview channels on the LG TV ?
Do the specs/manual for the Funai DVD mention DVB-T/Freeview at all ? (What's the model number ?)

You may be able to record Freeview from the tuner in the TV by selecting the AV input on the Funai. That assumes the TV can output from the digital tuner via scart. It also limits recordings to the channel being viewed and whilst the TV is on.

Even with a separate STB you'll have two timers to set for unattended recordngs.
