Default can i do my modem myself?

hi this is my first post and a bit of a newbie but i'm quick to learn and understand thigs, anyway my modem has gone off twice this week and i've had to pay a guy both times to put it on, the second time he done it it looked real simple, he just put a ethernet in and used a program, click something some writing went along the screen and that was it, it was working again, so i'm thinking surely i can do this myself but just not sure which program he used and what to do lol i have a 250 modem i think with Infinite firmware. if any1 could help me out with this it would be appreciate, just i dont feel like paying for it to fixed again lol
thanks

never saw the thanks button sorry. i've read through the guides and understand most of it lol i know now what part/section of my city i'm in and know that i'm in a pure ntl area, all i really want to understand is, if my modem goes down again is how to put it back on, i got ambit config tool and understand that i must get macs but i cant use a mac thats in the same section of my city that i'm in??
anyway is there any guide or anything for using ambit config tool? i know roughly how to use it but not confidently. thanks again
BTW thanks Bad_Ad84. the guide really helped me understand alot more about doing modems

trial and error mate, what u saw ur mate do is basicly it, only important bit is, u need the user name and password, some people change this so they have to go back to them...

if u got 20mb macs u dont need to force, so untick force config, if u only find rts-98 ull have to select a force config, but most dont work anymore, also u need the server ip (ull find them posted somewhere on here)

hope this helps

hi iknow username and password, they were the default ones, i've used the DHCP Force program to sniff macs but as u guessed i've only got 4 out of 250 lol that have config files which ofcourse are the rts-98 ones. i'm hoping someone will be able to sed me a 20mb config file from another site. if they do are u saying the only thing i'll need to change is the mac?
not to sure about server ip but will check tomorrow
thanks

EDIT: well i left DHCP force running all nite and it's count was over 1000 but only had a few config files but i got two 10mb and one 20mb. is that normal?

i swapped macs and got a couple 20mb and 10mb macs.
so if my modem ever goes down again do i just enter the new mac with server ip and thats it? i'm guessing i untick override TFTP cfg, what about disable DPI. and also TFTP filename, not sure which to pick.
sorry for all the questions just trying to make sure i understand fully
Thanks
