i see whats happened you say the cable was thrown over the roof. this is not recommended as it looks to have cut the cable on one of the tiles and let water get it in and wrecked your receiver

It may not have cut the cable even. With the cable slung over a roof, the wind may have blown it about a bit and it got gradually rubbed away.

Running though the loft is the best way to do it , but Sky would not do that, you'd have to get an independent satellite installer, it takes a lot longer to do (did one last week on the third floor, took me all morning on my tod)

Also, using foam di-electric is better than semi-airspaced, as it does not let the water run through it.
