Default SKY HD socket vs Normal Sky Socket

Hi All, may be a bit of a ramble i'm afriad! apologies in advance...

Yesterday we had sky out to fit sky HD. We live in an apartment building and have a communal dish, with an already installed sky socket. When we first moved in we were posted some BUMPH letters from sky, letting us know we could get sky, in the leaflet it showed two ipctures of sky sockets... the norm and HD which seemed to have 2 outputs as opposed to just the one. the one we have has just the one (normal sky)

the guy came out to install HD yesterday, and has told us that the junction box attatched to the communal dish, that would direct the specific signal to our apartment had blown its fuse, so wont work, and as it was built along with the apartment, it wasnt a sky issue, but needed to be reported to the maintanence for the block (have done)

but here is my question... i've hooked up a normal sky box and it works fine, gettin the free channels, but the HD box says no signal being recieved. he didnt change the socket to the HD one... does it need a different one for HD to work? and is the HD signal totally different to normal sky~? meaning why is our old box is getting good strength signal, and the HD says none being recieved.

To me it sounds more like a fault with the box... would someone please tell me if I'm just being dense?

thank you!

Hi,

There is no such thing as a Sky socket or any any difference between the HD one and the SD one.

However, what you should have in your apartment is an outlet plate with an F-type connector on it, which would run to the communial dish distrubution system.

If the normal Sky box works then the HD one should too.

But (not having Sky myself), I think that the Sky HD box is also a twin tuner (similar to Sky+) so for this you need two F-type sockets on the wall, one for each input on the box. But it should still half work with just one.

If there was something wrong with the distribution system, as you rightly say, the normal Sky box would not work either. Suspect that the Sky HD box is duff.

The Headend could have a stacker to send both feeds down a single cable, but I doubt it. I suspect the build is only for a single feed to each flat. You should get SkyHD OK, but not the recording facilities.

Check the the SkyHD box has the cable connected to input 1 and not input2

NO it doesn't. I had a look at that last night and noticed two sockets on the back of the box, but only one with the cable in. (edit:... it does go into input 1)

So are we saying that the blown fuse more than likely is not the issue (if there is even a blown fuse) and that it should still get a signal... therefore a dud box/dud engineer?

I'd not be happy if our record facility wont work either! all them sports channels for the hubby means I won't be watching my CSI!!!

As a standard Sky box works, the feed is live. If there is any doubt, take the HD box to a friends house that has their own dish and try it there.

You could also try forcing a software download - press and hold backup on the box when inserting the power lead, keep backup pressed for approx 30 seconds until all lights come on the front panel.

If all else fails and it is not against the rules of the forum, then you could post your general but not exact location and someone here could recommend an independent installer (charges would, I'm sure, apply) in your area to sort it out for you.

I'm pretty sure that the recording facility will still work with only one dish input, but you can't record one channel whilst watching another.

Its the usual story which i see at least once a week. Its called Sky engineers don't know their arse from their elbow when it comes to communal systems

The amount of times they have blamed the communal system only for me to pass the job straight back to them because their s**te Sky HD box isn't working.

This year alone i have passed back 10 faulty Sky HD boxes back to Sky when they have blamed the fault on the communal system. If a standard box works so will the HD one

Thought so Nano! I did as he said and reported it to our people, You’re quite close to me so it could even be you the maintenance guys call out! lol

I'll give them a call and tell them off, armed with all this info, and tell them that it’s the box! Hopefully they’ll come out and I can cancel the Contractors to save them wasting their time!
