No, put a HDD in Put your DVD RW in (Although DVD RW not essential for booting, Neither is a HDD). Take motherboard out of case, onto a solid worktop with a piece of cardboard underneath, Install GPU, RAM,Obviously CPU. Put PSU cables into motherboard, turn power on at wall... Touch the 2 Pins for power with a screwdriver and voila.

Any issues give me a shout.

If you say don't need HDD and DVD, then I'll lve then out for now - at the mo, no prtf boot process is happening.
So, I'm going to take it apart and take it out - not sure what you mean by touch the 2 pins for power with a screwdriver !!!!? The only "2 pins" I know of are the Live and Neutral - and I ain't going to touch them with a screwdriver !!!!

Seriously, is there some 2 pin connector ? Why do I not just connect the power cables from the power supply to the mobo and switch it on like normal ?

Okay-latest update-took the mobo out and on cardboard etc - connected the power just to the mobo (power supply is still inside case) andturned on. Still fans starting and stopping. So, then noticed that the 24 pin connector wasn't properly pushed down onto the mobo (this must have been like this all along as I took mobo out with it still attached. So, I turned off again and pushed connector don fully. Then turned on and now, no stopping and starting fans. But no nothing .... ???

I have no HDD connected just RAM, CPU (on board graphics). So, can a mobo boot up to a point without a HDD ? Should I see anything on screen.

How can I know if my mobo is shorted/fried ? Any way of checking ?

TIA
Rob

Yeh you can boot the computer up with no HDD or nothing else connected and you can go into BIOS to see your settings. Ive had it before where a pc wouldnt power up and i was on it for hours after reading the motherboard manual found out before powering up have to move a jumper setting near CMOS and then it powered up although without the CMOS battery motherboard can still power up but dont keep settings. But as soon as i done that it booted straight up just check manual and see if there is anything.

Ok ive managed to dig out some POST beep codes for you if you get power but its not booting up and u got the audio connected on the MB it will beep with some codes see this list for the error:

1 short: System boots successfully
2 short: CMOS setting error
1 long, 1 short: Memory or motherboard error
1 long, 2 short: Monitor or graphics card error
1 long, 3 short: Keyboard error
1 long, 9 short: BIOS ROM error
Continuous long beeps: Graphics card not inserted properly
Continuous short beeps: Power error

Apparently with your M/B if the CPU fan connector is not plugged in correctly or loose M/B will NOT power up it is a safety feature. Other things to check is RAM remove it check connections make sure its being put in correctly and if you have 2 or more try one at a time and try in different RAM sockets making sure the notch in the middle lines up so its correctly installed.

Okay, a mate of mine came over last night and we took it apart again. As I mentioned, the thing that I did notice was that I didn't have the 24 pin plug down peroperly. When I pushed it down properly and had the 4 pin power one connected too, no boot, no fans - but this was different in that the fans stopped doing the stop/starting.

So, I checked as he put it back together and he done nothing different.
The only variables that changed was that the 24 pin connector was fully pressed down and that he was wearing a anti-static wrist strap thingy when doing it.

Anyway, thanks for all the trouble shooting help.

An anti static wrist strap is basically to Avoid any ESD your body maybe carrying coming into contact with any motherboard components prone to ESD death. Its not really essential to wear an anti static wrist strap. Simply earthing yourself by touching the Power Supply casing will ground you.

It could be a PSU issue if your still having problems with booting mate.

The only thing I could add to that (for when it looks like it could work) is that if we're talking about the small panel (at lower left of the pic showing rear view) which has holes for the usb and other external connectors, then you may find you have to remove this to allow the motherboard stuff to fit cleanly in the cabinet - I certainly had to, more than once.
