Have just built my first HTPC and when I turned it on, the fans (power, two case fans and CPU fan) and the front power/led just go on/off every second and never powers up.
I have Motherboard installed as per instructions and case earthed etc Any ideas ? have u got the manual that came with the motherboard? it might give u some clues.
could be a warning sign that something isnt inserted properly like ram or processor fan and is auto switching off to safe guard from burning out. does it make any beeps? |

No beeps - I'm sure I've done something wrong but have read back over all instructions and as far as I can see, I done as per the instructions.
It's not sutting down, if I left power on, it would kee going on/off/on/off etc I removed the battery to reset the CMOS, jus in case there was any issues. Help ..... My first PC build and already being put off ever doing one again ![]() Rob |

I had a smiliar problem a few months back, all I did was put washers underneath the screws so that they werent touching the motherboard and it booted up fine

Some motherboards have a seperate power going to V core i think it is that what its called lol it is basically a 4pin plug that plugs in the motherboard from the power supply if that aint plugged in it will power the motherboard fans etc but it wont boot sometimes look for that also.

Ta Blakey and Smurf.
I'm in work now but when I get home this evening, I will try that power connector in the pic and if not, then will try washers. I just have a few general questions about builds and earthing - 1) the case came with "riser" screws - these were some metal - but surely, these must be made from something which does not conduct ??? 2) the Motherboard connections at the back touch the cover plate, which in turn touches the case ???? 3) if I took the power supply on its own and disconnected it from everything else and turned on, would the power supply fan come on ? Ta Rob |

1) if these are the motherboard mounting screws, you have to look and see whether the motherboard expects to earth to the case through them (contact pads at mount points).
2) that sounds bad - I'd always look to have the motherboard clear of anything except obvious connecting points. 3)NO - you usually have to short a couple of points together to emulate the action of turning the PC on from the front panel (I've seen hints on how to do it, but cannot recall where)

1) Don't fully understand your explanation - I amn't sure what is expected to earth to what - so, I can't check it. All I know regards earthing is that I followed all instructions that came with both the case and mobo. There is one earth wire which was screwed onto the case already and it goes in behind the front of the case around where the LCD is - this was pre-installed when I got the case.
3) I was just wondering - I was just going to test it to make sure the power supply was working. 2) - Maybe I didn't explain properly - I got the case and it had a connector cover which can come out - in this cover, it was quite generic to fit a video,USB,audio & other connectors etc. Then I got one with the Motherboard and obviously fits the specific connectors on the mobo. So, as far as I can see, the motherboard connectors will always touch this, which is always connected to the case ?? See the rear view below - how can the little panel which surrounds the individual connectos not touch the connectors themselves and therefore the motherboard ? I'm confused - is the idea always for the Motherboard not to touch the case ? Anyway, when I get home, I am going to check the power connector Smurf mentioned.

Take everything out of the case and boot from a surface with cardboard underneath the Motherboard. This will clear you of any shorting issues. To power up, touch the 2 power pins with a screwdriver once the psu is connected.
Boot from the basics, 1 stick of ram, 1 DVD RW etc etc. Its simply a process of elimination. If it boots outside of the case fine. Obviously something inside the case is causing the issue. Regards Craig |
