Many years ago, when my son graduated from HS, he built his computer. It was huge compared to my Dddddell (can you tell I hate it?) It had a lexan door and all kinds of blue lights inside, with way more LEDs than the space shuttle. I made some wize crack about this fact, but it wasn't a new fad, as most of the 'show' car mounted amps had clear covers and chrome electrolytic caps and LEDs that did nothing more than show off the guts.
To put this into perspective, I am 58 years old. When I was a kid, I used to love to lie in bed, lights off, and listen to the baseball game, on AM radio. Most often it was the Yankees, but sometimes when atmospheric conditions were good, I could also listen to the Cubs. (I'm in CT) As far back as I can remember, I was 'into' radio, and there was something soothing about the glow from the five tubes in my old Hallicrafters radio. Years later someone gave me a bumper sticker that said " Real Radios Glow In The Dark". I didn't yet have a car, so I stuck it on my bedroom door. Technology, today, moves at such a huge pace, it far outstrips my ability to keep up with it. Only the high end stereo amps still use tubes, in lieu of transistors, but one thing remains the same; we still have a fascination with the visual appeal of seeing the innermost workings of our electronic GIZMOS. The old colored wires have given way to green, red, and brownish PC boards. The resistors may still have their colored coded values imprinted, and ICs and other 'devices' have their own unique shapes. It all adds up to an eye appealing assembly. Gone are the 'glow in the dark' tubes, so we add artificial light, so we can still lay in the dark and take comfort.
I still like to lie in bed and listen to the Yankees, but I've grown up. I now have six cars, and I now listen on a Collins radio that has 17 tubes.

That's pretty sweet. If I didn't spend so much money on my rover, I'd have one of those sitting next to me here in the office. I guess this ****ty Dell hasn't been bad, but I'd like to have a toy like your's...

Remember when Radio Shack and even all the convenience stores had tube testers and a whole rack of tubes for do-it-yourself TV repair? It was like a slanted table with about 50 different plug ins for different size tubes.
