Question Tracking device for laptop???

Hi guys! A mate of mine is currently studying in uni and so he's required to take in his laptop for doing his coursework etc from time-to-time. Anyway, he was wondering if there was any software or hardware that he could use on the laptop as a tracking device in the unfortunate event that it gets stolen? I've done some research and come across lojack but I've read that this is only useful for Dell laptops. Other solutions involved tracking of the laptop only where the thief logs on to the internet. However, I believe this can be overridden if the laptop is disassembled etc. So, are there any other things he could use to act as a tracking device? Thanks in advance guys! Kimi.

I've recently started selling this software and all I can say is WOW!

It allows you to Audit, Track, Remote Delete & Recover your Laptop Assets!

Bit of the marketing rubbish...

Computrace Technology
The Computrace® Agent by Absolute Software is a small software client that is embedded into the firmware of a computer at the factory. Or it can be easily installed with a simple download. Once activated, the Agent maintains daily contact with the Absolute Monitoring Centre. This daily contact allows IT asset managers to manage their IT assets (on or off company networks). By logging into the Absolute Customer Centre they can monitor their devices, knowing where they are, who’s using them, and what types of software and other applications reside on them. If a computer is reported stolen, the Computrace Agent silently transmits data back to the Absolute Monitoring Centre. Specific details are obtained like the physical location of the computer, any activity that has occurred post-theft, and other important data that will help the local police track and retrieve the asset. Customers can also remotely delete data sensitive information. This allows subscribers to comply with government and corporate regulations regarding business and customer data. The audit reports generated after a data delete command provides them with proof of their compliance.

This presumably relies upon the "new user" being in range of an insecure WiFi/internet access, and attempting to use the laptop.

Thats correct, the laptop has to hit a WiFi/Lan to comunicate with the control centre. There is a new product coming out very shortly called LoJack for Laptops my company has exclusivity on the Student version offering the product at upto 50% off. Email me if you would like more information
