Default Connection issues

Hi all.

I'm having a nightmare with the stability of my connection.
In My living room I have my PC with a FireDTV C card and a Paid for modem running at 20Mb.

If I connect the Modem directly to the wall socket the upstream is at 61dB but it will work fine.
If I put a splitter in so I can connect the TV, the Upstream will still be at 61dB but the modem will randomly drop connection. Sometimes for several hours somtime for a minute or so.

A VM engineer visited recently. I removed the DVB C Card but left the splitter in plce. The Engineer muttered something about the splitter potentially causing an issue removed it, put in a 6Db attenuator and left telling me that they will have to get a network engineer to look at the cab in the street. Even with the attenuator in plce the Upstream is till at 61dB

Obviously I can't tell VM how I have my setup, But Why does the splitter apparently cause issues and is there anything I can do?

Thanks
T

Hi G77, It's actually the one that Virgin Sent with the Modem, I have no Idea if they are quality parts or not.

It is possible picking up a decent splitter from maplins would sort out the problem?

i's start by checkingthe joints in the cable, sometimes the outer braid touches the inner and causes big probs with signals

I think the Cables are OK. If I take the splitter out the Modem will work fine with all cables.
