nah, if you've removed one leg, that should do. completely removing it wont make any diff.
if you want my honest opinion, i'd say keep the box for spares. its not gonna be much good. there old now. i mean, there alright for a tenner at a car boot like.
if you do what to stick with it, i'd say leave the lid off the box and keep well away from radiators ect. see if that helps.

taken the diode fully out so will see what happens???

yeah had it for some years done gud but may get a sammy much better and stable but will give it a chance to survive!
