Jambutty's Help on how to repair a KV Remote Control.
These are Simple to repair and yer can save yer self £10-£15 instead of buying a new one when yer can easily repair it yer self. There are only 3 components in a kv remote control that can short out: 1 Capacitor (16v 1uf): 1 Ceramic Resonator (ZTB-455E): 1 Blue Glass Emiter/Transmitter: OK your RC suddenly stops working when yer aim it at yer Kv, first of all replace the battery's (in case they are drained-or faded), after doin' this and it's still not sending a command to the kv. OK yer may have dropped yer rc on floor or sat on it or stood on it or a component has just degraded due to a weak component. So what do we do next to find out what's wrong with the remote control: If you know how to test components with a multimeter then there are only 3 components that will have shorted, as stated above. BUT yer don't even need a multitester really because like I have stated there are only 3 and each component would cost 10p from Maplins or good electronics shop (unless you can go yerself to get these components then yer would have to send off for them and then the postage and package would be about £2-£3) so best if yer can get em from Maplins or somewhere else to save on p&p if yer got a shop near to where you live and you will get these 3 components for about £1. So here we go: lets now get this rc working again (yer obviously need to have a soldering iron and a solder pump), this is needed to get the component/s out of the circuit board. Ok lets do the most likely fault on the KV RC and take out the Blue Emitter at the top of the RC, will be coloured deep blue. take this out with solder sucker (Important, make sure you polarize this emitter when puttin the new one in place, otherwise if you polarize this wrong, it simply won't work and will quickly burn the emitter after 1-2 minutes and damage the rc beyond repair, so be careful here) OK yer managed to replace the Emitter, put rc back together and now put batterys in, after this I'm 80% sure that the RC will now be functioning to the unit. BUT if the rc is still not operating after replacing the Emitter, take the RC apart again and now put a new Capacitor (16v 1uf) in the RC, once again these are polarized so make sure yer get this right otherwise RC won't work, if yer done this right then it's almost certain that you have now repaird a faulty Kv RC and saved yerself £10-£15. By the way the Ceramic Resonator (ZTB-455E I mentioned is most unlikely to be faulty, so it's either the Emitter or the Capacitor that was at fault. One last Important point to make here, if the rc is still not functioning to the kv unit, then it may well be that the RC is not faulty and is most likley a faulty IR TX on the actual KV Unit, if this is the case then there is not much more you can do to make the rc operate to the unit, so you would either have to operate the kv controls from the box (which would be a ball-ache if yer were watching progs in bed and have to keep getting out of yer warm bed) Hope this as been of some use to someone witha faulty KV and yer saved yerself a few quid with these simple tips. AJ

I know this has been a while but maybe this could be stickied? Its quite a good guide for someone who doesn't want to pay £10-£20 for a remote

Totaly agree with waqasahmed, this is a good bit of info for the DIY guys and its a shame that it will get lost in the forum, if it was put in the stikies then its there to see at all times, without having to search![]() PS...a great piece of info from jambutty

Thanks smurf and jaysbee666 for this info about stickied and glad yer like the info, yea yer can mend any remote with this easy guide I put up.
just a matter of caps & emitters that make them stop working, yer can buy 10 emitters for £1 and caps would cost about £1 for 10 so get some in ready for if yer rc stops working or any of yer mates needs repairing, if any one is stuck after these tips then just get back to me. Cheers Alan

you will see that on the minus side of the component that the board it goes to will have a little white half circle.
If your not sure and yer mending a rc then when yer pop em out a the board, just take note on how you took em out, take a pic with yer digital camera is best bet. also the emitter has 1 leg shorter than the other, small leg is the cathode and long leg is the adode, once again if unsure make a diagram how you take em out cos the emitter in the rc will have same size of legs, when yer get a new emitter it has 1 leg shorter than the other. If yer still stuck then send it on to me mate. Regards AJ
