Why is my modem/router/wireless not working - made clear!

Ok, there are multiple threads and in some cases multiple explanations to the problems that all cloned modem users are having. Rather than make a cluttered forum even worse than it already is lets keep it all here so everyone can find the answers they need.

I can get online without my router but with it the internet just hangs even though the modem reports the connection should be working (same applies vice versa) Why is this?

This is because virgin have banned your physical MAC address of either your router (should that be the one not working) or your computer. Although your modem will report success getting online will not be so successful.

Router
If you are using a router and cant get online, try using the spoof MAC address option and change its value with a random one. If this does not work then you will have to look on Google for your router brand/model and information on how to change its physical MAC address.

Direct connection
You need to change the NIC MAC, there are many ways to do this; the fastest way I found and many others is a piece of software called “MAC Makeup” which is freely available of Softpedia.

NOTICE: A NUMBER OF ANTI-VIRUS UTILTIES REPORT THIS SOFTWARE AS DANGEROUS; IGNORE WANRINGS! THIS SOFTWARE IS HALMLESS AND GENUINE! I advise users of AVG to disable it before downloading as AVG can block access to files even with the ignore/add exception option used.

Simply extract the download file, open it up, select your NIC, click generate random then change! Also disable the NIC via device manager, to do this; right click my computer, select properties and then click the hardware tab. Then press the device manager button, find your NIC in the list, right click, select disable then repeat and select enable.

My modem is actually reporting to not be working, why is this?

This is more than likely because you are using a forced configuration file, it is possible to still force configuration files however there are certain parameters in most places that have to be met.

Use a MAC that’s default configuration file is for an Ambit 120, for example:
cmreg-ntlhm120-rts98.cm
cmreg-ntlhm120-bas.cm
cmreg-ntlhm120-rts22.cm

I have personally found better success with MAC addresses that begin with 00:0 for example (this is a completely random MAC) 00:01:C6:A6:22:39. I have no idea if there is logic behind this or just coincidence; I am just reporting my success with it.

Don’t get comfortable, problems will be coming, I highly recommend you read the information above and spoof your NIC MAC as soon as possible!

I just clone my router Mac now mate in linksys its easy to do but i know VM are hitting Nics like sumtimes when it says all Operational and u get a ip like 82.168.127.1 sumthing like that it wont bring up google or anyother webpage.. when i spoofed my router it worked Brill same mac so it goes to show thats its either NIC's routers Mac's or just Vm being mean to us all hehe or just trying to stop those 50mb stealers!

Thanks man, your post made me give the cloning another go (didn't work first time) and my wireless is once again operational! Wonder how long I have before VM blacklist the new MAC my modem has though.

EDIT:

Can VM see your Network device NICs inside your computer if you're connecting wirelessly? Basically, is NIC spoofing still a neccessity now that I have got my wireless working again through MAC cloning?

Hi!

First post on here...

I figured out changing my router's MAC all my myself yesterday lol However, every couple of hours I still have to change the modem mac *and* the router mac to stay online...

People keep saying not to force the 50Mbit config - lol, all I ever use are 2Mbit macs without forcing anything.

Thats really good bit of info benyboybob thanks alot for that appreciated. Right ive got one for u ppl. Have infinite connected to 360 through router and laptop connects wirelessly to it but dont have a machine connected direct to it. I changed the mac and it started working for a few hours but has stopped again i cloned mac in router but it seems i keep getting booted off. Obviously i cant spoof the mac cuz its connected wirelessly. Haxoware works great on pc connected directly.

I agree that everyone should stop using the 50M configs...........
Downloads aint much better although I will miss the 1.6 up.....
I stopped using it 3 days ago and now struggle to seed torrents !!!

But I think everyone will agree its best to stop doing it and maybe VM will stop the hard hitting ?? Agreed ??
