Default Heres why your modems are going off

Taken from another site posted by dstream

Currently its a software upgrade in progress to the modems

my modem has already taken the upgrade so ive put my mac into a modem that hasnt taken an update. Even though it shows firmware 1001 as updated n e way

the mac forces an upgrade on the network as the modem mac is flagged to take one. and as you can see it fails even though its valid. Its my 20 meg one. it the has no access instantly at that point. Whilst my upgraded modem passes and logs on a different way.

the net access goes and only allows internal virgin websites.

a 250 mac also has the same update tagged to the modem. The update tries three times and then after that its dead.

Im now sure this is how the macs are going off and getting banned.

copied from cg post to this thanks to him

However, I don't think the MAC is being banned as such. I would expect the sub modem would execute the f/w upgrade and go online regardless of what the poor clone is up to..

The clone on the other hand would receive the f/w update in place of a working connection, hence the lack of operation (regardless of NIC MAC) leading people to conclude the MAC was banned.. <<< which it is

I know they have blacklisted my NIC MAC at least once as I had a perfectly operational modem which refused www access until the NIC MAC was altered. I tested this by changing the NIC MAC back and sure enough, no www access again.

Anyways, I think that's a seperate issue from your discovery which I understand is considered as fact here now

Would it be reasonable to suggest that if you're using a MAC that's due a modem update, you're going to be dead in the water until you either take the update ok or change the MAC then..?
EDIT2: Or they no longer mark the MAC for update (as old 'so called' dead MACs are coming back to life)

EDIT:
I did report that I was unable to use a 250 or 256 config when using a 120 MAC the other day (or vice versa) but that no longer seems to be the case here... lol

They are allowed three failed updates in the logging. Therefore incorrect mac as in a 120 ruuning on 250 so your modem fails or an infinite or haxor firmware so ban the pc mac addy add it to the ban address for that mac

pc mac 00 12 33 44 55 66 77 used 00 2a 00 00 00 00 00 etc so ban this addy

So, we need to use a MAC that goes with our model of modem?

A software upgrade would imply that all softwares across all modems are being upgraded to a new firmware, this isnt the case

as far as I know at the moment the only new revision of modem firmware being sent out is for 256s,

250s still upgrading to Alex firmware, 200s and 120s also upgrading to existing firmware,

I think judging from what I have seen over the past few days the software upgrade thing is more of a check, one of perhaps a few, and if the firmware reported back isnt the same as the most up to date one contained within the modems .cm config it just pulled then it probably gets slammed,

the thing with using terms of definitivety at the moment is that nothing has been certain, I have personally been using a 4100 mac on a 250 haxorware modem reporting to be running on eric firmware, not down for nearly a week now during all this commotion, so if what was mentioned above was the be all and end all then surely mine should be off right now?

Essentially, I think it is a number of factors and not just one particular thing, and perhaps the best thing you can do to stay on top of this is to make your modem look as much like a legit modem as possible,

Remember a lot of paying customers have been having as much downtime as most of us you know

I agree, bar a few reboots of the modem, nothing has gone down my end. Been relatively happy for just under a week now, as you said you have.

There must be more to this than any one thing, like you mentioned, this is likely to be caused by a number of factors.

No doubt we will find out eventually just what has been happening.
