Hi all, I would like your views on both the ex5100 and the ex7000hd boxes as im unsure which is currently the best buy....
the ex7000hd is £169.99 which offers 720 and 1080i upscaling and some hd channels so seems a good deal... however reading through the forum it seems people believe the upscaling isnt too great and for the moment the only HD channel is bbc hd until virgin agree a deal for the extra channels that sky offer.... the ex5100pvr is £109.00 so £60 cheaper and so far other than bbc hd offers no less channels. Both i believe also need and external hard drive to be purchased seperately also for recording. My tv is a Samsung 37" 1080p model, not the best manufacturer i know but i like it, i would just like to hear from people who have used either box, to offer advice on picture quality and value for money many thanks mike (newbie) |

Hi mate,
I use the 5100 at the moment amazingly on a 37" Samsung HD TV!! ![]() I was in the same boat as you but went with the 5100 PVR. Would have only gone for the 7000 if the upscaler had better reviews. All the ones I have seen have said its nowhere near the V+ box so I left it alone. Picure quality though on the 5100 is supprisingly good. Just so long as you aint sat on top of the TV, its really good, but that the same with anything. The best thing about the box though is that the HDD is simply slid in. You can buy them for about £150 inc the drive. The 7000 (i believe) can only use a USB HDD. Not so bad but the USB connection is at the FRONT!!!! stupid design as nobody would want a smart box with a cable hanging out of the front of it. Have a look on Lincsats page. Think he is a MOD on this site so if you buy from him you will get top notch service/support going forward as well. (link below to his store) Lincsat's Nick-Nacks Either way, the boxes will pay for themselves within 3 months ![]() Hope this helps. Let me know which you go with and what you think!

thanks very much mate, think ill go for the 5100 then ! im going to be a little too close to tv in new house so may not get the benefit of hd anyway really
got the choice of having tv in corner which is only ok from 1 sofa, or wall mounted with sofas at 90 degree angles to it and very close, not ideal think the 5100 it is, had looked at lincsats page, looks good the deal for 5100 with hard drive for 150. thanks again |

I have both of these boxes and the 7000 is by far a better picture overhaul. It does have it's problems being so new, epg isues etc but the new software will fix this. The USB port is at the BACK and not the front as previously mentioned, it was re-located to the back following comments from the great guys on tis site after initial trials

Hi mate, what tv have you got the ex7000 connected to? As thats the first positive review ive heard regarding the upscaling quality. Am I right in thinking as the distance and angle from my tv are going to be far from perfect, i might aswell go for the 5100? thanks |

If you like the footy and sports in general which taking it from your name you dont
then be aware that you dont tend(or i certainly dont) to get a great picture using a standard box.ie SV,Kryptview euro 5100 etc. These boxes obviously haven't got the upscaling facility that the ex7000 has so you dont get the best out of your tv.I've got the ex5100,starview and kryptview and i've tried them all on me HDtv.Ok when watching normal programes but the picture is naff when watching sports etc.So much so i went back to s*y just for the HD sports programes. Hope this helps.

i cant comment on the ex5100 but i purchased a ex7000 on thursday (2 april) .i started a thread before i ordered the box askin a similar question about the ex1000. i got the box up and running on a 32 inch lg lcd tv and wasnt too happy about the quality of the upscaler compared to the v+ (i have a v+ box on a panny set in the living room). but after playing about with the controls on the lg remote ie contrast, sharpness, ect i was suprised how good the quality is,still not as good as the v+ but very good on a 32 inch set.def worth the extra £70. not sure how to sort the channels into favs yet though. does anyone know how to sort this prob?
