Default Nokia N96

Hi All

My first post in the Mobile phone section so please be kind.

I'm not sure whether this is the right place for the post and I couldn't find a more suitable forum so here it goes ...

I was wondering whether anyone knows where to get the latest firmware for the Nokia N96. The phone has Orange software on it which is horrible and I've been told that flashing it with the "proper" Nokia software will help.

I've been told that the Nokia website does not allow "branded" phones to download any software they put on their website so that's why I'm asking around.

Thanks a lot!!!!

HI Gji25 ...

... and thanks a lot for your reply!

Do you know where I can get the software from? Is there anywhere on this forum where software is available for download?

Also, do I need any special cables to flash the phone?

Thanks again!

I think what you want to do is De-brand your handset Ziggy then install the latest firmware from Nokia so it gets rid of the orange things i've done it with 2 n series but dont know about the N96. What i done was used a software called NSS and you need to change the product code of the handset then you go to the Nokia update software and u update it to the latest update there is. Be careful though u do it wrong u can brick your handset but you would need the product id code for that handset.

Step 1
Make a Backup of your N96
Step 2
Download b-phreaks Nemesis Service
Step 3
Install Nemesis (Just click next at USB Virtual Drive)
Step 4
Open Nemesis (NSS)
Step 5
Connect N96 to PC via USB cable and choose 'PC Suite' mode
Step 6
Click the little magnifying glass icon (Scan For New Device)
Step 7
Click on the 'Phone Info' Icon
Step 8
Click 'Read'
Step 9
Tick 'Enable' Product Code
Step 10
Change Product code to 0568238 and press 'Write'
Step 11
Exit NSS
Step 12
Run NSU (Nokia Software Updater)

Whatever you do dont remove cable or disconnect phone whilst its updating or you will brick it!!!

What this does is trick the update service into thinking the phone is a unbranded handset and not an orange handset thus making it download the unbranded firmware on the phone.

I had Vodafone and when i put the unbranded nokia firmware my phone speeded up and it ran alot better and smoother than the branded firmware.

I found out that some branded software on the N96 do have issues definetely worth debranding though.
