Default NTL modems ip's gone to 192.168.100.10 ??

I bought an NTL / VirginMedia 'chipped/cloned/dodgy??' modem about 4 months back ..it has on the back '256' and 'model - Ambit'
It has been working flawlessly, downloading on utorrent at about 2mb/s, but about 3 weeks ago, my ip address changed from 80.xx.xxx.xx to

192.168.100.10 ... the ready light on the modem just flashes relentlessly and never stays lit for more than a second, weirdly enough, after

leaving it alone for 3-5 days, maybe trying the ipconfig /release thing from run/cmd and fiddling about with the tcp/ip properties and trying to

assign ip address' ( i am relatively new to computing, this was all playing really ) but .... i noticed that while i was watching t.v. one day, the

lights on the modem were flashing on send/recieve and after 5 minutes, the light on the READY stayed lit...woohoo i thought, and YEP, i was

back in business again.
Problem is ... it has done the 192 thing again, its been days now, do i turn it off, keep it turned on and flashing away .. weird thing is though, I

took it to a mates who has an NTL connection ( but no subscribed services ) and when i put his coax cable in the modem, it did the

send/recieve light flashing and the READY light was lit up, so it wasn't my modem that was naffed, it seems it's my connection at my house is

fu**d up for whatever reason, i don't understand..

Strangely tho' my digital telly box (chipped) still works, so WHY is my modem playing up, and how do i rectify it?? I hope some of you could

shed some light on this, it's really been doing my head in, ive been reading a bit on the subject of MAC numbers and the like, but i am really on

the lowest rung of the ladder, so any help is muchly appreciated and needed.. All the Best - FRED_C

I'll add this, i dunno if it makes a difference, - My house gets an NTL/virgin media connection FREE coz its a bungalow and its in an area with

tall warehouses that block t.v. arial signals, so all the houses get a basic connection, but just that, channels 1-5 only.. i have a chipped telly

box and thats still going strong, its on a cable coming off a splitter, 1 to my digi box, 1 to the modem thats giving me grief .... why would it work

at a friends but not at mine all of a sudden ??

Thanks, long post i know, i appologise, hope u can help ... Ta, Fred

If its ok at your m8s house check your cable any splitters, make sure the f connectors are good, no outer braid touching on centre copper wire, try it on cable box side of splitter or without.

You may need to spoof your mac to get back online try spoofing your mac using a software such as Smac.

Cheers for replying so soon .... I tried the other side of the splitter, even removed the splitter and used the cable that goes into the splitter but still get the same set of lights sequence and NO connection to internet...

1. Power
2. ethernet on for a few seconds, off for a second, on again..stays on
3. sync light flashes quickly, then 5 ish seconds later the ready light flashes slowly, then fast .. sometimes the down/arrow light flashes once or twice,as if it looks like its gonna work, but it ends there, and i am left with a fast flashing 'ready' light .. ethernet light flashes once every ten seconds, but is always on.

me and my mate both have cables that have no service (tv box or b/band ) so why would it work at his, and not at my house, i lonly took the modem, not the pc to his, but it definately had the up and down lights flashing, and the 'ready' light was on permanently.

Is there any software i should be checking out, whats that DHCP force, is that anything to do with this problem, This HAS happened before 2-3 weeks ago, and fixed itself without me doing anything, i am TOTALY new to this, but any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
All the Best - FRED

Hi Fred, VM could be upgrading your area for the new 50mbit service, that might be why.

check your 192.168.100.1 page and give us some power level readings,
they could be low due to the service upgrading, your modem might not be able to lock freq due to low power levels.

"check your 192.168.100.1 page and give us some power level readings ""

Huh, do you mean when i try and get a website and the message comes up that it can't be found and 'try again' option is there, how do i get my level readings, sorry for my n00biness, oh, my mate only lives 4 streets away, so would they be upgrading on a street by street basis, i've also tried about 5 different cABles but still no joy, i might be cheeky and ask next door if i can plug it in tomorrow with 1 of my cables as we all have 'ntl' connections inside our houses, if it works next door, i'll be totaly confused.. wudn't they have shut my cable-box down if 'THEY' were on to me ??

Thanks, All the Best - FRED

What firmware are you using? Did u try spoofing your mac as i said before recently virmin blacklisted the NIC macs and by spoofing your mac you can normally get online. Try that first before anything.

You dont need to spoof macs or anything like that.

Afraid you have to filter out the good from the bad

When you are getting the 192.168.100.* ip this merely means you dont have an internet connection, which subsequently means that you don't have an internet IP.

It's a new HFCMAC address that you need.

To find your signal levels USE THE SEARCH. LOL only joking.

Log into Haxorware at http://192.168.100.1 and click SIGNAL in the left hand menu. This will give you all the info you need about your downstream and upstream power levels.

There wasn't a signal option in the left hand panel.

It gave me my mac number .. i dunno wether or not to put that on here, a DOCSIS 1/1.1/2 compliant

Software Version : 2.111.1000
Hardware Version : 1.9
Bootcode version 1.1.2c

but no levels or level readings of any sort,( unless that lot up there are them ) do i click on the 'LOGIN' link in the left of the screen where it says 'root = password and username''

today, well ,this afternoon, the send/recieve lights on my modem flashed for a minute or 2 and the READY light stayed ON, i quickly booted up my pc,. but before i got to click mozilla it went back into the flashing 'ready' light again, damnit!!, i had connection for a minute i think, could this be a case of them upgrading the service like TOOLZKIT said in his post.

i am currently trying to understand all the HFC MAC stuff, the 1st 3 are
000:59:xx.xx.xx , mean anything ?? still have no connection, i am in the east midlands any 1 else havin problems with getting an ip address ?
Thanks to the ppl who are helping me, anything else i could be doing ?
i dunno wether or not to try and 'spoof' my adress now ???
