The gold plating doesnt tarnish, the ordinary steel contacts turn black after a few months, thats why you end up throwing them away when you get bad connections, you wont notice the difference with a cheap cable when new unless you get interference or its a long length, as robbo said their not screened.
You get what you pay for but some are ridiculously over priced.

Right i see what the point of gold connections are now. And totally agree with you about the price of some scart cables its ridicoulous considering its a couple of cheap pins and a few wires. Lol.

Better still, avoid scart if possible. I only use it for my cable box, any degradation in picture quality I don't notice, because it's crap anyway.

Component is better, HDMI even better.

and To Mr JAMBUTTY!

I don't write rubbish ( well not most of the time anyway, LOL). I have seen it happen, with my DVD player connected to the TV via a 3m scart, the picture with a cheapo scart was absolutely attrocious, caused by intereference. But being too tight to pay for a decent long scart, I used 5 lengths of satellite cable instead via component video/audio, cured the problem nicely and very cheaply too.

Well TBH with you, Ive used the cheap ones for years and only once had to throw them out(bad connection) Ive never seen a stell contact turning black within a few months and most of the time, Ive had a good connection
