Hi,
I am a paying Virgin Media customer, have been for many years. Infact, I am still using my Ambit 100 modem (think I have been using it for 8 years now)! ![]() Anyway, I am on the 2Mbit plan and as of lately the modem has been playing up. It crashes randomly, will not respond for a while and then suddenly comes back, sometimes needs to be restarted. I was thinking about buying an Ambit 255 or 256 brand new that I could use instead but my question is how do I clone my existing modem so that the new one can use my subscription? I guess I could call Virgin Media so they can officially do it but their support sucks ass, i'd rather not spend all day talking to some indian person who knows nothing about anything. So this will be my last resort, i'd rather do it all myself. Any help would be appreciated ![]() -DiZOX Last edited by DiZOX; 09-04-09 at 02:17 PM. |

You wont be able to you need to talk with them, tell them your internet woes and they should upgrade your modem for free.

Yeah I'm with these guys I wouldn't clone a subbed modem. Even though virgin support is whack you'll get less headaches in the long run by getting a modem from them.

Taking all above into consideration, I think some may have missed the point.
He doesn't want to steal service, or force a config, he just wants to use his own customer equipment, which, might I add, is 100% acceptable and legal to do. However, the proper way to do it, would be to buy a new modem and then register the MAC with the cable company. But the way I see it, is if you are paying and you want to connect a cloned modem, but one that uses your legitimate MAC address and config, then you are in the right to do so. After all, nothing is being stolen or misappropriated. Also, for edit: What happens to the legitimate MAC owners when a hacker is forcing a config higher than that of which the customer is paying for? That makes me wonder about the whole issue of getting caught out. |

VM don't allow you to "register" your own Modem.
And they won't supply a second "cloned" modem either, you'd have to pay for a separate BB connection. That's my understanding anyway.
