one thing to note about dhcp is that if you enable it and use a router with dhcp enabled too, the two will conflict and you'll get naff all conectivity.

Sorry mate, that isn't true.

The DHCP server of the cable modem provides the router with it's WAN IP address, and the DHCP server of the router provides your attached devices with their internal LAN IP addresses.

Also there are BPI errors. I don't know what they are, but have you tried each possible BPI setting?
