Default Connecting external USB devices to Foxsat HDR - look in!

There's been a lot of talk on other forums about the connecting of an external USB HDD to the Foxsat HDR.
I tried it myself last night and everyone who has tried it before me gets the same 'error message' - Foxsat does not recognise the USB device please reformat to FAT 16/32

It refers to almost every external HDD being in the NTFS format supported by Windows XP/Vista.
You cannot change a drive back to FAT once it is formatted in NTFS and even if you could it would have to be partitioned into 4GB partitions.
So, there seems to be a problem if the user wants to transfer files to his PC and recode them to DVD???

MOST PEN STICK USB DRIVES ARE IN FAT FORMAT and these are fine, but your storage capabilities are limited !!!

Well, this subject is covered in the May issue of What Satellite & Digital TV. Humax have responded by saying
"Drivers do exist for the type of operating system used in the Humax Foxsat range, but the NTFS file system is the intellectual property of Microsoft and does not offer the level of support and reliability that Humax demands for it's products. The drivers for the FAT, however, are well established and can be easily and reliably supported.
The one limitation of FAT32 is that it is unable to store files larger than 4GB. This means that longer programmes are often too big to be copied, which we appreciate is disappointing for some users. Humax monitors user feedback to inform future product and software updates where resources permit.
Humax has led the way in providing feature updates to support our products and while I cannot promise this particular issue will be addressed, I assure you we take user feedback very seriously".

So.... it seems the only way around this 'problem' for the time being until Humax come up with something, is to transfer everything straight from the receiver's HDD to a DVD recorder via a couple of rewritable DVD's and do your authoring on the PC from those. That's what I'll be doing anyway!!!

Default Re: Connecting external USB devices to Foxsat HDR - look in!

Or you could create a linux partition on you PC and format your external hard disk to ext3 which the foxsat HDR can read and write to without the file size limitations.

Once you have the file in linux you can edit, convert and burn using any of the free programs available. The ony problem with this is that if you make any changes to the original .ts video file you wont be able to play it back on the foxsat box
