i have this problem setting up a multimedia card reader/writer in my computer, i can plug it in whilst windows is running and it will auto-detect all the various drives.

but if i plug it in before switching my computer on then the pc hang just after the post beep, before ide detection process,

i have a soltek SL-75DRV5 motherboard with redstorm overclocking built-in

the bios firmware is the latest one available from the website

i have restored bios to load optimum defaults

i have enabled auto-updating of ESCD

the machine also has 2 western digital hard drives installed and 2 pioneer dvd/dvdrw drives

i have included some pictures to show what i mean,

pictire 2 is the connector it has
picture 3 is the usb header on the board. this has 9 pins
picture 4 is where it hangs ( with mmc reader plugged in prior to switching on )

Did it come with a driver/software? if so try deleting/uninstaling it if thats the problem then maybe windows will just recognise it as a generic mass storage and load its own driver.
How many USB devices do you have connected? Is your PSU up to running multiple USB loads? try only having one device connected.

the reader didnt come with any drivers, windows picks them up and recognizes it as a mass storage device, i have plenty of other devices connected, but hwne these are removed then still the computer hangs at start-up with reader connected
