The gist was that the serial cables on the inside have been soldered to the wrong pins, thus preventing an update

Hmm... after looking inside the box I'm quite confident that it was soldered correctly. Back to the drawing board....

Question Re: "The downloading is not requested"

I'm a fast eater........

I'm obviously guessing here but I'd say contact problem on the adapter or wrong Com port (I know your pc says port 3 but stranger things have happened).
No way you can try it on a pc with a serial port? Would eliminate a fair bit
HH.

Oh & did you check what firmware's on the box?

Unfortunately I don't have access to an old pc with a serial port :0S

How would I check the firmware on the box? I'm not sure I have a scart cable lying around. Would there be an issue updating the firmware or downloading a firmware if it corresponded to that which was already on the box?

Question Re: "The downloading is not requested"

1/ I can't believe you don't have a scart cable in the house.
2/ AFAIK you can flash the same firmware again, shouldn't be a problem so even if it's got 1903 on you could flash it again. Have heard of bad flashes before & people re-flashed to cure.
Right now your laptop (?) can't 'see' the KV so you ain't at the stage of worrying if there would be an issue updating the firmware or downloading a firmware if it corresponded to that which was already on the box?
3/ Mate's house got a pc with serial port?
TTFN,
HH.

Okay, I dug out an old scart cable and located the system information.

I have the following:

date: 25/12/2008
Soft ver. Evolution v1.7.00
H/W ver. v1.2.0

I've recently moved to London and don't know any body with a serial port.

So you defo need new firmware on, what you've got is too old.
Device manager shows no problem for the adapter & it installed ok with the cd?
Maybe try different Com Ports, I would.
Re the procedure. KV switched off, adapter & cable connected from laptop to KV. Start download on downtool on laptop THEN turn On KV.
Good luck,
HH.
