With credits to members at Datacave:

Phone OFF

Connect the USB lead to the phone, hold down the 2+5 keys, THEN plug the USB lead into the PC. If the USB lead is connected to the PC before you connect it to the phone, then it won't work.

I find that this statement is incorrect. I have been dealing with Sony Ericssons for about 4 years now and I have always had the USB cable connected whilst holding 2 & 5 or C. It doesn't make a difference if the cable is connected to the PC, however it does if you have it connected to the phone whilst you try and hold those buttons. You need to hold them, and THEN connect the cable. If you did it successfully, your computer will begin to install the SEMC_FLASH driver and allow you to connect it with programs such as Phone XS, SETool or Aerix .

This statement confuses me - you're saying the (Phone)USB<--->(PC)USB connection can't be made before trying to use the buttons, yes?

That's what the instructions I posted advocate too, except that the USB cable is in the Phone as opposed to the PC i.e. only one end of the USB cable is connected to something, with the other end floating

The Phone can't detect a floating USB cable, and neither can a PC, since there's no circuit being completed, so it shouldn't make any difference which end is connected first, as long as the connection isn't completed until after numbers 2+5 have been held in.

No but you stated that you cannot connect the cable to the PC until you have pressed 2 & 5 in and attached the USB cable to the phone.

Ok, I see what you're referring to now. The beauty of copy & paste.

Can we agree that only one end of the USB cable should be connected at first, and the buttons have then to be held down before completing the USB connection? Had I proof read the c+p a little better I'd have taken out the bit that said
Quote:
If the USB lead is connected to the PC before you connect it to the phone, then it won't work.
and rephrased it to
Quote:
If the USB lead is connected to the PC and Phone before you hold the buttons down, then it won't work.
Having said that, your statement was ambiguous in that you said
Quote:
It doesn't make a difference if the cable is connected to the PC, however it does if you have it connected to the phone whilst you try and hold those buttons.
In reality I think you meant
Quote:

Either way, it can't possibly matter which single USB-to-device connection is made first, as long as the complete (USB connected to both devices) connection occurs after the buttons have been held in.

Yes, the last one is how I meant it. We are both correct but in our own unique ways lol.
