I just think there is something obvious that I have missed out.

re-cap:
open modem connect max232 cable, open hyperterminal connect power to modem you should have output in hyperterminal window.

no output on hyper reasons below:
not connected to correct pins on modem.
faulty max232 cable.

I have tried moving the cable to different points on the modem but not working (as in flipped over and also from other start point - 5th pin). Does anyonehave the cable allocation on the modem, I have a pre-made cable that came with my MAX232 adapter. There is an LED on my MAX232 which comes on when connected.

GND = Black
TXD = Red
VCC = Blue
RXD = Yellow

GRD goes on the pin closest to the ethernet connecter followed by TXD then VCC then RXD

wont help you Apcov81 as all your wires are all one color, but will help others.

Thanks for this - It will help as I can follow the cable from one connector to the other as the MAX232 chipset has the pins labelled :-).

Windows has its own firewall built in aswell so be sure to turn that off aswell. Have u put correct settings in hyperterminal for the com port? The settings are as follows:

Bits per second: 115200
Data bits: 8
Parity: None
Stop bits: 1
Flow control: None
