Default changing bootloader

i have an ambit 255 modem with the latest haxorware on it I want to try fitzs latest test fix to see if it clears up a couple of issues that i have been having but I don't have the noisy boot loader with the P option. From what I have read everyone has said to use softjtag and re-write the boot loader but I cant for the life of me get softjtag to connect to the modem I don't think I need to console unlock first as through hyper terminal i get a CM> prompt although I have tried console unlocking then doing it and soft jtag will connect to the modem but then gives a time out error. Is it possible to use the web GUI boot loader update page and pick the boot loader from there or am I just doing something blatantly wrong?

cheers
