Default Modem isn't working - Am I using wrong cable ?

Hey chaps, I'm having some serious Modem and Tv issues tonight as I decided to branch out and extend my cable feed into a different room.

Ok I'll try a very long story as short as I can..... I'm in Ireland (Dublin) by the way , I know most of you guys are in the UK so just thought I'd mention it, just to lay out all the facts.

Basically I have a working SUBBED modem working away with my replay lite box in the sitting room and both are working fine. If I unplug my subbem modem and plug in my modem running Haxorware it works perfect and I can hit 20mbs........ Now as I use my subbed modem for my phone I decided to try put my hacked modem the other room downstairs. So I drilled a hole in the wall and put on a splitter I bought in a satellite shop for €7, I was told it's very good. But when I plug it into my Haxorware modem it stays on ranging.
I then took off the splitter that i bought and put the original N*L one back on and ran the cable from that but once again the modem is stuck on ranging.
As soon as I bring my modem back inside it works no problem at all.

Any ideas on what could be causing this to happen ?
I bought a few meters of coaxial cable in the local DIY (Woodies) today, is this the correct cable for using with Tv boxes and Modems ?

I'm think this is all down to a poor signal but what I can't grasp is the subbem and hacked modem both work fine when on together and when the replay lite is on too in the sitting room, but in the other room when just the hacked modem is connected straight to the cable feed it wont' work.

Sorry for the long story. I'm cream crackered to say the least after hours of messing about with modems and tv boxes for the best part of the day and I'm still out of luck so far.

You need to check that you are getting a good enough signal now that you have added to the cabling in your house.

Also bear in mind that splitter affect the gain etc of your signal. Special attention must be paid to the upstream, and make sure that if you are using an amplifier that it has an active return path. Disappointingly many on fleabay are advertised with an Active Return path but they are lying. Especially with the 3.99 jobbies. The one you need to get is the yellow Konig amplifier with the 3 adjustment pots on it. These are the ones that are recommended and go for about 25 quid.

I learnt my lesson with the cheap crap first, so just to let you know that the quality of your cabling and ancilliraies is top notch for an all round better experience.

If the cable modem is stuck on ranging, this is a common symptom of upstream problems. You can be getting the downstream OK, but maybe because of a cabling issue your cable modem is having problems talking back to the head end. Also, cable modems will stop trying once they have reached a certain power level, this is something that is controlled at the head end only.

Ok, so basically do you think this is an out and out signal problem ?

It's similar with my tv boxes. As I said my replay lite and subbed modem work fine in the sitting room but my subbed pace box won't work in the other room either unless the cable is connected directly to the main feed, it just will not work off a splitter even without anything else on the splitter.

This problem I'm having with the modem being stuck on ranging, I opend a thread early last month with a similar problem if not the same. In a mates house less than a mile away the same things happens, the modem just stays on ranging.

I'm a noob at the min to the cable/modem scene but you think my problem in my house is a signal problem ?
Could you give me some tips on what exatly I will need to get the maximum quality for my boxes and modems.

I checked fleabay for the Konig boosters but I can only see a 2 headed one, would that be sufficient ? Also with the booster I should get a good splitter ?

Thanks

EDIT:

Just want to know what could cause the 'upstream problems' ? Could this be down to the signal too ?

Try using a signal amplifier to improve your signal mate, you can purchase them on fleabay or elsewhere. Also, try new coax cable as there maybe snags and/or kinks in the wire inside.

Hi, yes I'm going to order a signal amplifier hopefully tomorrow from fleabay.
The Konig signal amplifier with the 2 ports, will that do the job ? Also should I order a few Konig splitters too as in are they a very good make ?

Yes I'll buy some new cable tomorrow. The cable i bought today was something like €0.89c per meter. I'll head to the local satellite shop tomorrow and try get some good cable.

Should do yeah. Konig is a good make, all my splitters are Konig. That's probably why then, cheap and tacky cable lol. The stuff Vermin give you is good, sturdy and good quality.

Cheers guy's, no doubt I will be having another shot tomorrow when I get some hopefully better cable from an actual satellite shop but I think it's best I order the Konig Amplifier anyway.

I've checked and double check my connections Smurf. I've been chopping cable all day lol. But I suppose I got really tired after a few hours of messing around so I'll also check them again tomorrow, I'm not stopping until I get this working. It's terrible when the footie is on and the missus wants to watch the soaps, it keeps her quiet so it's best to let her watch the soaps lol

Thanks for the response lads and I'll post back when I try some new cable tomorow.

Thanks
