Just to help anybody with a unit that has been messing around and has now gone dead.
WARNING!!! DO NOT WORK ON UNIT WITH THE MAINS LEAD PLUGGED IN UNLESS YOU ARE COMPETENT TO WORK WITH MAINS VOLTAGES!! If you are not competent find somebody that is, this info is to help you fix a fairly simple recurring problem. I have looked at a few boxes for mates over the last two years, I have had C14 a 1000uF 6.3 Volt radial electrolytic cap go open twice now causing the 3.3V CPU rail to be low (3.0V). Unit shows display bars but won't boot up or channel change. A new one that I had today was C5, a 47uF 450Volt radial electrolytic (Maplin part number JL18U). Unit blank display just like you have a blown fuse or unplugged it! This is on the mains side of the PSU, take care!!! It seems units that are around three years old are starting to show these problems. Good Luck. |
