Hi,
I been told by an friend that if I replace my SKY+ box with an appropriate Dreambox I can still still get the same channels and funtionality as before. That's fair enough. However he has also told me that if I then connect the Dreambox to the internet via an appropriate site/server then I can then also obtain a large number of "free to air" channels from around the globe too. The $64,000 question is "how accurate is that statement and is it something which is easy to do ?". I'm not talking about having the ability to receive ppv channels or anything illegal (such as card sharing, etc). Basically, I really don't fancy dumping my SKY+ box and forking out for a Dreambox only to find that I can't actually receive anything more I do at present. Does anyone know the answer ? Many thanks, Pete |

If you want extra free channels from around the globe you dont need any pay servers or anything like that - just an extra dish pointing at another satellite and some cheap electronic switching gear.
If you just want one Sky dish then you may as well just keep your current SKy box as you wont get any extra channels over whats already on the Astra 2 "Sky satellites" Be aware if you ditch a Sky box for a DB you lose some functionality. You will get now and next on the epg at best - the full 14 day sky epg is specific to sky boxes. Red button functionality is none existant, although with a bit of technical trickery you can tune the BBCi streams in just as extra channels.

If your going to get a dreambox then a motorised dish is best. A dreambox wont get you any more channels that a patched receiver would, like the Technomate 5400 for example Only if you go down the card share route with a dreambox.

I deliberately didnt bring the idea of card shares up as it just confuses the issue.

Rioght before we go any further its absolutely impossible to get ALL the satellite around the globe. A reasonable number use absolutely secure encryptions, and many satellites are below the western and eastern horizons.
You might be hoping to reduce your Sky payments but to be brutally honest Sky provide one of the best pay tv services in Europe. If you think you are going to buy a "magic box" to give you all the UK channels for free you are going to be sorely disappointed - satellite doesnt work like that.
