You could use a cheap cctv camera with mic, wired or wireless, or even one you can access from anywhere on the internet , have a look at maplins website
The bugging device type work through fm radio, you tune them to a freq high up around 108 where theres no radio station, they do work but have a limited range.
you could also use just a microphone if you can run wires and plug into an old cassette recorder or similar.
