Default Quad RAM 100 wiring help !

Hello chaps

i done a bit of work for a mate and he gave me this wee quad, which had been chained to a post in his back garden for nearly 2 years ( his kid is 17 now and has grown out of it ) after a bit of soap and water and a hose, it looks like this...

i got a new battery and plug for it, but i cant find an ignition for it anywhere (the original is completely missing, the mate didnt even notice untill we lifted it out), fleabay has some cheapo ignitions that ' fit most chinese quads ' but the connector is different to the one i need.

now i know what im going to ask is a bit dodgy, but if need be, i'll pm mods/admins pics of chassis numbers / ID numbers on the bike to prove its not nicked (i really dont steal kids quads ffs, lol ).

if i cant find a suitable ignition (parts are rare for this bike) would anyone here know what wires i would need to cross (from the pic below) to get this bike started? basically i need to hotwire it, for now anyway, untill i try to find a new ignition.

ive promised this quad to my 2 nephews ( 11 and 12 ) and they have been busting my boiler for the last 2 days, ( is it going yet ? when will it be going ? you said it would be going by now, can i have a go yet? im on it first - no im on it first, etc etc, lol )

if anyone can help please post back or pm me.

cheers

Go to your nearest automotive factors and ask for a Lucas type ignition barrel.Should cost around £15-20. It wont be the right one but will work.

You will have to crimp some female spade terminals onto the wires and work out whats what but is not to difficult.

Just one word of warning, the keys are all the same. This shouldn't be a problem if its keep in a garage but may be a issue if you intend on leaving it outside.

As Lemon says this will suit your needs but as he states the keys are the same can even be operated with the winder from a tin of spam many a plant hire digger / roller or buses have gone missing with a spam key ( enjoyable childhood ) . With the recent downfall of lucas many motor factors have limited or no supply or lucas componants , I have seen such a switch that will work for you on flea-bay item No. 280345126977 for £10.70 inc postage

Cheers lemon !

i had a look at them 'lucas types' on ebay, id never heard of them before, they would do the job if i only knew what wires to join where, lol.

ive searched everywhere and cant find an original barrel that i can plug in, in place of this one, so it looks like the only way im gonna get it going, is to figure out which wires go where, theres also headlights/brake lights and an electric starter to contend with, and i wouldnt know where to start TBH.

i know nothing about this kind of stuff and im nearly always stoned, lol, but if im thinking right, the ignition is just an on off switch for the electrics (celinoid etc), the lights and the starter motor ??, so looking at the pic of the wires, theres 2 brown wires, 2 yellow wires and 2 black wires. could they be the 3 circuits ?? and could the red be the power supply to these 3 circuits ?? probably not, that would be too easy ffs, lol.

if anyone thinks they could help out with this, please post, before i end up strangling a nephew or two, or having to pay some mechanic a fortune to sellotape a few wires together.

cheers again

g80878, im not worried about having a key for it, it'll be used probably 1 day a week and locked up in my shed when not in use, ive also got a bloody big dog who lives right next door to it, so its gonna be safe as houses there.

something like the 'lucas' thingies, would be perfect, even a big plastic on/off switch would do, but i would still have to find out which wire joins to where, then solder the wires onto the switch.

perfect solution would be to find somewhere to buy an original that would just plug in, without me having to cut and join wires, but i've been searching for a few days now, and i cant find nowt, so im gonna have to do it the hard way, lol.

cheers for the help lads

the red wire is most likely to be perm live and the solid black is most likely the earth , all other wires are purely guess work at this stage , who makes the ram100 ? i would buy the ignition barrell and ask / pay a sparky for such advice or you could folllow the wires and make a mental diagram and tackle the task your self. I have had a quick look for you as i have various automotive imformation at hand but cannot find Ram quads could you give more info ie. who makes ram , model year etc..?

Cheers for the info g80878

from what i can gather the Ram 100 is made by SMC (never heard of em myself, lol). looking around the net it seems to be an earlier model of the 'Quadzilla' quads.

the bike was bought brand new by my mate at Christmas 2003, so its possibly 2002/2003 model.

ive pm'd you a pdf i found listing every nut bolt and washer on the bike but unfortunately, theres no mention of wire colours on the ignition bit (last page).

let me know if any of that helps me a bit, if not, i'll have to go to a car yard somewhere and pay for some help.

cheers again g80878 for the help with this mate.

The igniton key unit is on page 20 , item 14 , Part NO. 62501-SK9-00 MAIN SWITCH ASS'Y , direct replacement would be alot easier , looking at the diagram there is a plug at the end short loom that has broken , so its plug and play.
