Internetworking Technology Handbook - Cable Technologies [Internetworking] - Cisco Systems
This will explain all about the setup of cable networks. As for the size of your node or area well no idea i'm afraid, it could be 500 homes or it could be upto 2000 homes but don't quote me on those figures as i don't know how large the nodes get. Also that size might well be houses passed, not all on service. Ok lets say they have three upstreams and they do 8 meg each, then that would give your node a max upstream capacity of 24 meg. Now as you know not everyone hammers their connection 24/7 or at all for that matter. 75% or so of cables subscribers are on their lowest tier of service and say only 10-15% of those people will really hammer their bandwidth. Say you have 500 customers 50% of which are doing nothing so that takes you down to 250, 50% of those left are just surfing so ignore those people too. That then leaves you with 125 people using their connection and say just 40 of those are doing anything really bandwidth intensive. We now have say x5 on 20meg (3.84mbit) x15 on 10meg (7.68mbit) x20 on 2meg (5.12mbit) Total = 16.64mbit upstream usage That would still leave you with 7mbit free but over all the three channels of course. Some of this would also be used up by the web surfers and email subscribers. Now if you hammer the upload on your channel you could and prob will max out that channel and that is prob why you see some people getting no more than about 2meg upload or so as the channel they are on is then maxed out. This is very rough, but from time to time we do hit capacity as you don't get your full download speed, this is the same reason why. Once a node or area is at capacity then VM will resegment that node/UBR to make it smaller to resolve the problems, so it basically passes fewer homes. The size of nodes though will vary where you are in the country and the type of network build etc etc etc As we all know these are all different, but that is a very very basic desciption.

BTW G77 that's the bollocks man.
I'm just gutted...... e2a: Test this in the middle of the night. Also, please could you do a speed test with some torrents? Get me on msn and I'll send you a torrent that will stress that to the max. Last edited by cockneysean; 21-05-09 at 01:04 AM. |

Have you tried using the London server G77?
Probs will be closer to the mark as the Maidenhead server seems to f00k up quite a lot. Having watched the recording you made, you're one lucky SOB! lol
