Free version of Lavasoft Ad-Aware SE does not offer too much features espeically the real time detection so go for Spybot which is completely freeware!

Besides Adaware and Spybot, I got good results using EMCO Malware Destroyer. They also have a paid version that can scan remote computers on your LAN.

I have both Spybot & Ad-Aware (Lavasoft) installed on my PC and they does not allow anything to enter in my PC. I'm quite happy with the performance of these two softwares. I recommend both of these to anyone.
