Default Coax side sniffer

I have a SB5100 with Sigma on it that I use for setting peeps up in TW areas. It is very useful as the f/w has a built in sniffer that will pick up MAC's even if the modem is not sync'd. For example, just enter your frequency settings, and the light flashes away as though it is trying to lock on, but you can run the sniffer and it will start to detect MAC's.

What I want to know, is if there is a piece of software that you can run on your PC that will do the same. Because as we know, you normally have to get connected thru the VM activation page before you can start to sniff. It would be great to have a similar piece of software that you could run to sniff MAC's with without the cable modem having to be sync'd first.

Now I have heard of SNMP admin etc but do not have any experience of them. Does anyone know of a way how to do this, and what software could be used?

Does this work without the modem being sync'd to the network?

Ahh.

I am specifically trying to find a sniffer that does not need to the modem to be locked on first. Just like the one included in the Sigma f/w.
