If you're not dead set on doing the PS2, how about an xbox? Once chipped, it's an excellent little machine, and I'm sure there's chips out there for less than a tenner (or you could soft mod it too, I just picked up all the gear for soft modding from the car boot for £3 ).

I only suggest this if you're just after a little project and aren't set on the PS2. If you're definately wanting to do the PS2, just be like my wife and ignore me

Yes, I am just doing this as a project. Could you tell me more about this soft modding? At least then I can learn to use software to mod and use hardware to mod a console

To soft mod an Xbox you need a copy of one of three games, an xbox memory card and some way of getting the required files onto the memory card (if you struggle with this step, you could send me your memory card and I'd be happy to set it up for you). Then it's as simple as inserting the game, loading up a specific save file and pressing the A button! Takes less than 10 minutes. Google "Xbox soft mod", there's loads of easy tutorials out there.

Or there's the chipping method, I only ever used xecuter chips in the past, but they're quite expensive, there are other chips about. Chipping makes fitting a bigger HDD a bit easier.

Once chipped/softmodded, you can fit a larger HDD, install XBMC and have a neat little media player. I've currently got a Xbox sat under my TV now which plays movies streamed from my desktop HDD, gives me the weather report, allows me to play my music and pictures that ae stored on my desktop and laptop, watch youtube on my TV, BBC iPlayer, as well as letting me play all the old Megadrive games I loved so much with an emulator. Total cost of the system was £20 for the Xbox, £3 for the softmod kit (it still has its stock 8GB HDD).

Have a google for XBMC (I can't rate this software highly enough), and all of the other cool things a modded Xbox can do. If you get stuck I'm here to help, having just done 3 boxes, one that wouldn't read discs and had an Error 16, on that had a blank HDD, and one that didn't cause me any grief at all

The PS2 doesn't necessarily need a modchip, you can use Swap Magic or use the Memory Card Exploit and the CogSwap Loader to load backups.

I know this post is a bit late but to my knowledge, the PS1 is region free once it has been chipped. The region code of the drive is effectively "bypassed" to allow the playing of games from all regions, including imports.

The Breaker method does indeed work. I still have an ancient Action Replay cartridge somewhere lol.
