Question A question with a probable simple answer...

Hi,

I have been browsing this forum for months now and it has proved very helpful so firstly I'd liked to give thanks.

I have a problem that I can't seem to find the answer to so I thought I'd ask... I use SB5101E, Haxorware 1.1 rev31, Virgin media cable.

I have been forcing my download speed to 20mb for the last 5 months, everything worked perfectly fine. Last week the connection dropped suddenly. All lights solid, online light flashing. DHCP FAILED - Discover sent, no offer received etc. Anyway I tried a new mac address, forced to 20mb and it worked but I lost the connection within 3 day. Same problem occured, DHCP FAILED - Discover sent, no offer received.

I have since found another mac which is working at 2mb. I am too scared to alter the config file as it may mess up the connection again. The config I was using to force is - cm-cpe2-20480-768

My question, Is there a way I can force the speed or is this over now? If so, can you be kind enough to send me the config details. I've read something about 'dynamic areas', I don't know what this means but if my area has changed to dynamic, can I still force the speed? My area is Birmingham for anyone local.

I really appreaciate the help, seriously. I don't understand all the technical stuff, but I manage to get by with this forum. And yes, I appreciate that we get the internet free but 2mb after 5 months of 20mb is excruciating.

Thanks guys!

Dont force any configs mate, Use the config assigned to the mac address.
There's been a lot of changes/upgrades nationwide to VM's network. Have a look around and read some threads and see some ways people have gotten back on with stability.
What works best for me is trying mac after mac (all dynamic here now) and you will find some that stay on for 3-4 weeks. i have a 20mb thats been on over 5 weeks.

You might also of had a frequency change so have a look around at some people living nearish to you what problems/solutions they've found.

No I haven't done that, I'm not quite sure how to do it. I basically bought the modem pre-flashed on ebay 5 months ago so I didn't really need to do much. Now things are changes, I don't know what to do with it.

I got instructions for this (and smac) when I bought the modem but I use an apple mac so I skipped it. The modem worked fine for ages. I suppose I should look into now.

If I use this config will the connection die - class-cm-rts22.cm? The config currently assigned to the mac I'm using is class-cm-rts98.cm

I can't readily get mac because I don't use windows OS. I try to pick unsecure networks on my iphone within 5 miles but it's such a pain and time consuming. If you know for certain this kill my internet, please let me know.

Thanks.

Hmm... You are not using windows?

If you are on linux there are many sniffing tools if you know how to use them

I think something like ethereal may work for this, but I have never used it for sniffing macs on a cable modem network. Also on linux you could try running the sniffer with WINE, should work I think. You can get the dot net framework for WINE.

What O/S are you using btw?
