Hi demariano,
welcome to the forum.
Your questions cover a lot of ground, and deciding which receiver best suits your needs could take a while, there are quite a few
Do you want to receive just FTA, Free to Air, channels or are you thinking of subscribing to any packages?
For the moment I advise you to browse through lyngsat.com, have a look at the various satellites, and click on the Beam link, this will provide a map showing the approximate size of dish you would require to view various channels.
I should imagine most Brits, working abroad, would be trying to get Astra 2, 28.2E to view some of the FTA channels.

Packages are groups of encrypted channels you can subscribe to and legally watch, like Sky UK, Sky Germany (formerly Premiere), DigitAlb, Sky Italia, etc.. there are lots of them, far too many to list.

If you can afford to pay you can usually get a viewing subscription.
There are several free movie channels on Astra 2, 28.2E, and Eurobird 1, 28.5E, including Movies4men and Zone Horror.

The channels with a red F next to them are free to air.

If you're just after the Free channels on 28.2E then any dish and cheap receiver will do, if you want to view other satellites I'd look at getting a motorised dish set up and a cheap receiver, like the Technomate.
It all depends on what you want to do.
One tip many people often change their receiver but usually keep their dish.
Have you a budget in mind?
Do you want a motorized satellite system or just a dish for free to air channels on Astra 2?
Do you want a HD set up?
