At my lodgings is a sly digi dish that has been unused for a couple of years. I have followed the run down from the dish and it goes over the roof and down the wall into the v*rgin box. Can anyone think of a reason for this as it would be ideal for me to re-route the cable into my room but I don't want to disturb anything. There is no satellite equipment in the house other than mine in my room.

Probably someone who did not know where the cable came from, so shoved in in the cable box to try.

forgot to say I meant the box outside the house. The box is fastened up with a cable tie so its obviously been done by the virgin fitter. I can't think of a single reason why he would do this

Not necessarily so.
Any tidy householder may have have tucked the satellite cable( and tied it with cable ties),in to the cable box,to prevent water ingress in to the cable,asuming it is not actually physically connected to the input connector.
Or maybe the satellite cable entry was where the cable box has now been placed,and the cable installer removed the satellite cable internally(so no need to drill a new hole),and fitted the cable box instead,and then just popped the satellite cable in to the external cable box,to hide his/her "modification".
Or as Robbo has said,maybe someone not familiar,with either system,may have attempted to connect them both up,hoping to receive channels.

hmm well I know its not the people who live here as they know nothing about anything like that. Might have to open the box up and see if its connected up. I can understand the fitters using the same hole as their sky was taken out but I still can't see any need for the dish to be connected.

opened the box up and the sky dish cable was indeed just tucked in there out of the way. I now have another problem which I will post another thread about
