I'm a complete newie (female) and would really appreciate some help.I have a Sky dish but no longer subscribe to Sky. All I want to do is get Rai Uno and Rai Due to help me improve my Italian. I've gone on lots of forums but a lot of the info seems out of date and I don't understand some of the abbreviations - or, indeed, the technical info. I think my Sky dish is too small to reset towards Hotbird, but I'm not 100% sure. All I know is that I have a Sky dish on the wall and a cable that runs from it to the Sky decoder which the guys from Sky installed. Do I ditch the lot and start again? Can I make use of the Sky digital decoder/dish/brackets on wall or not? Do I need a Technomate or is that very 2006? Do I need to drill more holes in the wall? (Please say no.) I asked a professional installation company some of these questions but they didn't answer any of them, just sent me an extortionate price. I'm in South London. |

Do you have a Sky digibox?
If you do,are you watching the free channels and are wanting to continue watching them? If not then you could use your existing Sky minidish and Sky digibox,by moving the Sky minidish to Hotbird, and use the Sky digibox to view the Rai channels. If however you want to continue to watch the free English channels. You could get another minidish(Zone 2),and a free to air receiver, such as the Technomate, they are still highly regarded. You could purchase your own equipment, and just get installation quotes from other local installation companies. |

When we install a similar system in Kent we charge £80 - same price as a Freesat system. Equipment costs are around £130

Hi, Sat-World
I do have a Sky digibox and yeah, I still use it to watch the free channels that way. But do I need to? If I got another minidish(Zone 2) and a Technomate would they replace the Sky dish and the Sky receiver? Would I be able to get the freeview channels and the Italian channels using the one new dish and the more flexible replacement box? Would that be the neatest and most flexible solution? I've just looked up an "Italian package" in the link on this forum which lists: * Technomate TM3150 USB * 80cm High Gain Dish * 0.1db High Gain Single LNB * Wall Mount * 20 Meters of Cable * Fixings Is that what I need? Thanks |

You would need to keep the existing zone 1 sky dish to continue viewing the uk chanels that you get through your sky box at the moment. A 60cm Zone 2 wouldn't be large enough to catch astra 2 at 28e and hotbird at 13e. Your options for both satellites would be either 2 dishes, or a larger 80cm dish with 2 lnb's to catch both signals like you listed at the botom of your last post, You would be able to just use one reciever though.

Hi, Rick1980
Okay, so if I get rid of the Sky dish and get a 80cm dish, I still need 2 inb's (inb's = inboxes? decoding box thingys?) but one receiver. What is a receiver? ![]() I'm not keen on having stacks of electical stuff piled up in my lounge. Is there any way I can have just one dish and one piece of electrical equipment under the TV that will allow me to see Freeview channels and receive the Italian channels? Also, will the current Sky cable that stretches from the window to my TV be reusable for the connection? Is it a standard cable? |

A receiver is the satellite box. Do you subscribe to Sky? if you don't then you can use one receiver another 80cm dish and connect both dishes via a DiSEqC switch to the receiver allowing you to access both 28.2 east and 13 east satellites. The receiver would then switch automatically between satellites depending on the satellite you choose to view.

As southern sat says, you can use one reciever if you have no sky subscription, it would go in place of your sky box. Your best taking his advice on equipment btw. 28e and 13e are possible just on an 80cm, both being very strong signals. You might want to consider a 90cm to build in a bit more bad weather margin. Dish wise it is either 1 large dish with 2 x lnb's or 2 small dishes (Zone 1's would do both). The switch would sit behind a dish and could be connected to the existing sky cable if it's in good condition. The cheapest option for you would be to have another small dish setup for 13e and use the existing sky dish also. It wouldn't be too hard to do the job yourself if you fancied having a go, there are plenty of guides on here and people to help if you get stuck.
