You will have to post the full details of the receiver, including make/model number.
Did it come with a manual?

The Humax HD models do, i.e the HDR and the Foxsat, via a secret menu, pressing the colured buttons red,gren,yellow,blue,red,green,yellow accesses it. Don't know about SD models as I have never seen one.

It is Humax foxsat HD black box, says freesat HD on the other side of the front but can't find a model no on it anywhere, it cost about £150 quid new. God Knows where the manual is

You can download the manual from humaxdigital.com, click on Support and Download Centre,
From the options select
Product Group - Digital Set Top Box
Product Sub Type - Satellite
Product Model - Foxsat HD

Then click on the Manual tab and download it.
According to the manual your receiver does have these controls:
DiSEqC Control Version1.0, 1.2, USALS, SCD (Single Cable Distribution)

Just downloaded the manual and read it, looking for a bit saying 'can handle multiple LNBs' or similar but couldn't see it. Is there a technical term I should look for?

The Humax Foxsat can control a Diseqc switch, as already mentioned.
